Following on from the Guy Martin cleaner thread, i have some black 29+ rims i'd like to return to silver for a new project.

I've previously done the oven cleaner and vinegar on old cranks, but wondered if there was a better method for stripping large items like rims?

Caustic Soda in Water... in a well ventilated place. Put some rubber gloves and goggles on too...

Your teeth may feel a little soft after the experience...

It works very fast

Cheap citrus cleaner off ebay?
I bought some so called 'bike-safe' cleaner sold usable on any surface including carbon and it took the anodising off the cassette spider and Hope expander ring!

Do you then dip in an acid top stop the reaction, or simply wash off quickly?

I just hose off with lots of water the many times I have done it. Started using caustic soda in the 80's when bmxing and anodizing was used A LOT.

Some of those bright purple bits are probably worth money now!

Yep just water. I did it in a bath... wont be doing that again! too many fumes... but I was a hasty student.

It works a charm.. just use a brush or similar to help its on its way. if you leave it too long it can start pitting the metal

I've done it a few times using caustic with good results, but on a rim I'd be worried about the caustic getting into the middle section and not being able to flush it properly. Should be okay if you take your time and don't just dunk the rim in a bucket of caustic I guess.
Definitely do it outside, the fumes can really affect your lungs.

That is nowhere near as much fun. Just do it outside and don't put too much in at once as it can get a bit lively. Also don't put it in a container that it will eat through.
