Hi,I need new tyres for my BFe & I'm stuck on which are the best ones /combo & what size to choose.I ride the trails around Oxfordshire & commute on her sometimes so I don't do anything mega !
I need a tyre that's fast rolling but grippy,I'm running high rollers at the moment.
Any ideas ?
Cheers !
Not sure if there is such a tyre. Just get a few different tyres for different duties and get F1 fast at tyre changes
Schwalbe Rocket Ron
You'll probably find pink ones will work best
wtb nano. fast, light, grippy.
want to buy a unused set?
Vertical Pro.
The answer everyone will give will be the tyre they have now. Which is utter BS.
Why are you considering moving from the High Rollers?
If you're just after a very decent tyre, and good price, get some On One smorgasboards.
rickon is wrong, cos I only use schwalbe marathon plus touring tyres.....which are crap on a mtb....... 😆
What's the gen with the moon ? & pink & green don't go together..
Anyway,I want to try the high roller 2 but the shops I went in today didn't have them in stock,I've heard a nobby nic & racing Ralph go together as an all weather pair but the schwalbe come up pretty big.
I'll have another look for the HR2 tomorrow.
Rickon: Nope I´m running Hans Dampf so no Rockets on my Horse.
Ralph rear Ron front works for me on trail and in town. The ralph wears awful fast on tarmac though...
For a BFe I'd recommend a Specialized Butcher control on the front and an Ardent on the back. The RaRa is a pretty decent rear but I'd steer clear of the Nobby Nic, they grip really well right to the point where they break away completely and deposit you in the nearest ditch within 0.05s.
Commuting duty means no schwalbes imo, the soft compounts evaporate laughably fast on dirt never mind tarmac. And the hard ones are orrible.
Do you like the highrollers? What do you want to change? And which version is it you have? That way we can pick faster or slower, grippier or less grippy for you etc, rather than just recommending essentially random tyres.
Alternatively, pick a brand and arbitrarily love it, pick 2 brands and arbitrarily hate it, form strong opinions based on internet reviews and 2 second rides on mates' bikes, then adopt them like a religion, like everyone else does. And Butcher front and either Purgatory or Captain rear depending on how fast you want to go.
If you're thinking of the HR2 to replace the HR, well yes they grip *much* better and are a huge improvement over the HR. But as a result they are also more draggy than the HR.
The same goes for Hans Dampfs which the current trend is to recommend them to everyone and their dog. Great grip, draggy. I'd place HD and HR2 as being very similar.
It's all massively subjective and down to your own preferences, and tyre threads can run and run. Still for steep descents and general techy trail mucking about, Minion front + HR2 rear is my thing now on the bouncy bike. I wouldn't run the HR2 on my hard tail though as I use that for a little more xc-ish trail stuff, mostly night rides. I still have the Minion up front and it's a great straight line slicer through crud, but currently trying an Ardent at the back. It's like a lower profile HR and seems to roll very well. I do notice issues powering through sloppy stuff though, where the HR and HR2 grip better.
My 2p anyway.
Mountain kings in 2.2 black chilli. I have some, slighty used, sitting in my shed. Make me an offer!
