following on from the !st aid kit thread....

what is the worst injury you've had to deal with out on the trail?

i think my best one was when some guy left the road and went head first into a concrete storm drain, crushing and then ripping his helmet off on the wall of rock to the side and landing on his face. he lay there face down and wasn't moving with a big puddle of blood forming around his head. "SHIT" was my first thought; thinking he was bleeding from his mouth, nose of ears. luckily he was conscious, but he was holding his hand against his face. asked him to show us what was causing him so much pain.

when he moved his hand away his whole top lip came with it till it hung by a thread of skin.

not pretty.

45 min wait for an ambulance. he ended up having skin grafts taken from his arse to re-build his face.

ironically, there wasn't much we could do other than talk to him and keep him cool. i gave him a few sterile patches to hold against his face. oh, and i was thankful for the surgical gloves i had in my pack....
