I think I'm going to sell a nice bike. Pretty sure. But I'm also pretty sure that 2 weeks before christmas is pretty much the worst time imaginable, and I'm in no rush. So I'm thinking I want to set a deadline, basically "fall in love with this bike by day X or sell it", and it makes sense for that deadline to be the start of Peak Bike Selling Season...

Which, I'm assuming is about March? Weather's looking up, Christmas is all paid for, possibly travel is getting easier... What do you reckon?

I would agree that's probably peak buying time, but come March it'll be another year older. I'd try at a speculative price now, you may get lucky then realistically priced from January.

Unless there is a glut of bikes with similar spec to your one that are up for sale way below what you want, get it advertised, the supply of new bikes has been completely outstriped by demand since the first lockdown.

Current demand for bikes is very high, but depends on how nice.

Up to 2k i would say it will sell now regardless.

Get it listed now and price in a margin as ** “everyone wants a discount”.
That said I sold a bike in the summer with said margin and he didn’t ask..

Id just chuck it up and see if it sells, the longer you leave it the more it depreciates and becomes dated when newer models come out.

I sold a bike last month, listed it on here, eBay, Pinkbike and facebook marketplace and all the FB cycling groups I could find, took 2-3weeks to sell, had a lot of time wasting messages and real low ball offers! Stuck to my guns and sold it within the margin I was after, Pinkbike and Facebook got the most messages, Facebook was where the buyer saw it.

I'd just stick it up for sale now. I've cleared out a load of high end bits I have horded over a while & all went for what I would consider 'very' strong money.

I've been trying to eBay a hardtail for a few weeks at what I think is a reasonable price.

A couple of derisory offers (less than new frame [or fork for that matter] price for the whole bike) but nothing more than that. It might be I'm significantly over egging it but yeah, now seems like a lousy time to be selling.

Get it listed now and price in a margin as ** “everyone wants a discount”.

As it is I've currently relisted at a higher price to see if said derisory offers increase accordingly.

I think I'll be splitting for parts come January.

(FWIW my prior experience is the nicer a bike is the less its worth SH on ebay as you get much less interest. Selling a trek/specialised/santa cruz etc for a decent price seems vastly easier than say a geometron, I guess the market for a mondeo is just a lot bigger than for ferrari)

Just advertise it now and at a high price. If it sells, you're rich as hell, if not, you've got a nice bike to ride!

Best time to sell is when YOU don't need to sell

December/January are typically the worst time to sell bikes or bike parts an around April is the best (in my experience of selling bike stuff over 15 years)
However, this year is clearly not typical so I would just list it at the price I want and leave it there
