My wife and kids are desperate for a skiing holiday. Due to various knee and hip issues I'll struggle to join them with any skiing or boarding, at best I might manage a day or two over the course of a week. I don't fancy putting a stop to the whole holiday idea, nor do I really want to spend a week kicking my heels while they ski. I read that some resorts are starting to cater for snow biking- Both proper pedalling with fat bikes, and also downhill things with skis instead of wheels. Anyone got any experience of doing this in any resorts, and anywhere they'd recommend that would give me a good alternative to the normal skiing and boarding.

Avoriaz were doing fat bike tours last year. I think they're fairly common most places. I imagine the routes are tame and flat but nothing to stop you renting a bike yourself and exploring. Biggest challenge will be finding a shop that has one to hire out generally.

Have seen the DH bike/ ski things but never for rental. Usually something someone has clobbered together themselves. There are those daft ski scooter things though.

Alternatively, find a resort with a huge drop to almost sea level. Something like Les Arcs with Bourg St Maurice below it. Could stay down there and hire a bike to play on the lower part of the mountain which would most likely be snow free.

What about Sierra Nevada in spain? skiing at high elevation and some really good riding at lower elevation.

In Samoens there is plenty of flat trails along the river and Fer a Cheval for easy fat bike explore.

Or see the guys at Mountain Spirit who do eFatbike tours up to Tete de Boston. I think they also have an arrangement at Les Carroz to bomb down the pistes one or two evenings a week.

As another activity - highly recommend trying a Yooner Enduro sled. Looks stupid, like a Harry Potter nimbus 1000 on a single ski. Crazy fun.

If you’ve dodgy knees and hips I’d steer well clear of those ski bike things, you’d look likely to do yourself a serious injury on one and seen a disproportionate number of people hobbling away from accidents on them or worse being put in the blood wagon.

A lot of lower resorts are promoting fatbiking on snowshoe trails now. Were off to les rousses in the jura end Jan for the 3rd time. It's a small (very) alpine ski resort but lots of snowshoe trails and cross country ski (you cant ride on those). Other small alpine stuff close by but youd need a cad to get around them. Or bike there!

Edit - Chamonix has fatbike hire places and some good riding from the town, also courmayeur just through the tunnel

I've seen fatbikes and snow scooters for hire in samoens.

I think Extreme glisse near the lift station had snow bikes as well.
