What's currently considered the best short travel play bike at the minute? I was looking at the Transition Double but just wondered if there's something else out there that's as good/cheaper or just plain better.

It's the bike that's missing from my overtly sensible bike collection - serious Downhill Rig - Commy Supreme DH V3, trail rig - Camber Elite, Enduro - Commy Meta AM 1.

Yeti 4x-do they still make them?
Commencal meta 4x-NOT light.
Pivot 4x-spendy.
Specialised Sx-US only but sooo nice.

DMR Bolt looks fun, as does the YT Industries Play.

I was looking at that YT Play bike. I know they do the Direct Sales thing but that on paper looks a bloody bargain.

The spec is impressive for the cash and looks very similar to the Double. Quite tempted by that, even if the paint job isn't quite my taste.

It'll be muddy anyway, so the paint is no biggy.

If I ever thought of buying a diddy-wheeled bike again then Id ride a DMR Bolt SS'd.

Id still ride it like the 29er SS shandy-queen that I am, but Id look radtothegnar on it.

The bolt does look the dogs but I've heard mixed reviews about the ride.

Why is buying a new bike such a pain? It should be a pleasurable thing to do but I'm yet to buy any bike without any sense of regret.

No idea what the YT Play is like, but I'm really happy with my Wicked 150 from them. I had loads of questions before I bought and the guys at YT were really great to deal with.

Any quality issues with it, frame wise I mean?

Meta 4x off merlin for £750 looks a bargain and fits your requirements.

I've been looking for something like this when I can afford to upgrade and there doesn't seem to be much about. The Bolt looks nice to me but it's heavy and not sure how it'd pedal. DMR bikes are always fun to ride though ime. The Double looks awesome but a bit small.

How about the Haro Porter?

I think the new NS Soda is out soon as well and comes in a shorter travel slopestyle version as well as the 160mm.

Not so far, only had it a couple of weeks and not done anything harsher than some easy trail rides. Weld quality looks excellent (as far as I can tell, not being an engineer!) and the spec is really good for the money. I'd originally looked at getting a Nukeproof Mega frame and cannibalising my hardtail for the parts to build it up, but it only cost about £400 more to get the Wicked. Dirt Mag gave the YT Noton a brilliant writeup recently, so I guess there's no reason to think the Play (or any other of their bikes) would be anything less than great.

No hardtail in your collection? Hows about a 4X style ti hardtail of some description?

I've toyed with the idea of a 4" full sus play bike, but they're all too small for me and my 6" mini dh is plenty playful if i'm in the mood.

I know, It's shameful isn't it. To be honest it's either a 4" Travel play bike or a hardtail like the Ragley Piglet.
