Afternoon all,

I'm currently sat just five miles into my commute home waiting for my feet to cool down to the point where it's comfortable to ride again!

My shoes (Lake MX237s) are comfortable enough most of the time, but I've just realised that whilst they look as though they're quite well ventilated, much of the mesh seems to be for cosmetic purposes only!

Could anyone recommend some shoes which will take SPD cleats, are preferably a wide fit at the toe, and above all have as much ventilation as possible for those 20 degrees and upwards summer days?

Preferably not too expensive (around £50 would be lovely) as they'll only be used on hot days, and only on a 15 mile each way commute.

If you had flat pedals you could go barefoot.... (take the pins out first though)

Thin socks?.

Good socks are important, the thin morvelo ones work well for me. I'm rolling round in my Spec 2FO's at the moment, good mesh on the top and fine despite being black. Other than that have some Shimano road ones with vents above and below so any decent one like that works fine but socks are probably more important.

Ask Zippykona to fit an recycled SPD plate to an old pair of Crocs?

(Think that the Fashion Police have raided Wiggle - all those Shimano sandals are OOS)

If those sandals had an enclosed toe they would be OK.

Overbudget, but usable for more than the odd commute

Thanks for the replies.  I went for the Shimano sandals, and they certainly make a huge diiference!

They're not as rigid as my Lake shoes, but that's hardly surprising.  The lack of an enclosed toe also doesn't matter on my commute, and whilst I certainly wouldn't ride them on trails around nettles and brambles, I ride flats off-road anyway.

Having said that, they were still far from perfect, and the fact that I have no problems at all in Five-tens even in this weather did get me wondering if maybe there's something else going on?  I'm wondering if maybe the saddle on my road bike - different to my others - is pressing slightly on an artery or something and messing with the blood flow a bit?  I might try swapping the saddle over for a bit just to rule that in/out.
