I've a 2007 (i think) Specialized Allez and it's about time I got some guards for it. Reckon i'd get out more in winter and commute to work.

Can some kind soul recommend a solid fit and forget set?

Plus, could an Allez take a rack and guards?

SKS Chromoplastics
And yes, will be fine with a rack as well.

SKS is the answer, but not necessarily P35 chromoplastics. These have a flat profile at the top and may not go tight inside the front fork. Blumells have a rounder profile that can help improve clearance. THey are also all black so match plain tyres better. The chromolastics do have a habit of snapping at the rear brake bridge after a couple of seasons.

Another nice solution, if you don't want to cut the (magnificently strong stainless steel SKS) stays is the new Bontrager no-cut stay (NCS) road mudguards. Same profile as the Bluemells, but no break away clip on the front - very useful with tight fitting guards.

Topeak mudguards are also rounder profile and I have a set on Teen1's CAAD8. They look like they were made by SKS to be honest.
