I'm not picking neesh up atm...I've always carried my phone in my pocket and wondered if that's the best way or not??
Shorts pocket, gilet chest pocket or in my camelbak all work for me.
I find chest pocket or short pocket resulted in poor tracking. Rear Jersey pocket or top pocket of bag works best. Need a good clear sky view.
Depends a bit on the phone and where the GPS sensor is, surrounding materials and how sensitive it is. Some are happy deep in a bag, others need to be closer to the surface.
Just a warning on short pockets, I've known several people now who have ended up with a smashed phone screen during an off when it been in their pocket 😉
I go with outer facing pocket of the backpack. Used to be phone, now its a Garmin, though I have a bar mount for it on the hard tail so often goes there, though it does get very muddy that way. As the garmin has a temperature sensor though it's more accurate there than in the bag were it reads 5C or more higher. There's an argument the barometer can be affected by wind against it though. It's certainly true with temperature as I've seen on a cold night recently it was down to 1C but after stopping for a few minutes it was up to 5C.
