What's the best money-no-object full face DH helmet? I'm currently using a Specialized Deviant but after 5+ years the inner shell is starting to come loose from the outer shell so it's time for a new one, and as 90% of my riding is lift-assisted I don't need anything as light or well ventilated but just want the replacement to be as safe as possible should the worst happen.

I've been looking at the POC Cortex DH as the MIPS system sounds worth having, but having tried one on the chin bar sticks out a mile and I worry it would dig in and tuck my head under if I had a fall sliding head-first on my front, but conversely with the Troy Lee D3 the chin bar is so close to my mouth I can kiss it so it feels like it wouldn't do much to protect my teeth in a faceplant. Are there any good helmets that are somewhere in between? If you could stop time and choose any helmet to wear as you head over the bars at 30mph what would you pick?

Cheers!

Have you tried a Fox Carbon? To be honest, at that level they are as good as each other when it comes to the amount of protection they offer. Just go for the one that fits you best and you like the look of.

I have a Bell Transfer, which is really nice, but the carbon version, the Full 9, is supposed to be very good as well.

Have a look at the Airoh Aviator helmets, very big in MX and Enduro motorcycle racing, but lighter than a D3. More and more riders have started using them for DH in the past 2 years.

Troy Lee D3 at 50% off on CRC (plus the AUTUMN code currently there) is a fantastic lid.

Got mine with two stacked codes, plus the 50%, plus the 20% off helmets they did a while back - turned an impossibly expensive helmet into a bargain.

That Airoh is pretty nifty, think I'd be looking at one of them if money was no object. I like the sound of maximum comfortness too!

D3. I think it has more exceeds safety this that and the others than the others and is MTB specific. Which I think makes a difference due to the nature of the crashes we might have. There was a 'study' carried out a while back as to why we need MTB specific lids and why we don't just use MX lids.

tbh While it might be the best helmet you can buy if you treat it like the old one it'll be pretty 5h1t for a fair number of years... Far better to buy a good value quality helmet and replace it regularly and/or after a big stack (ie when it's been scar'd).

yeah buy on best fit - if two or 3 fit similar go for best design & safety credentials (DOT, SNELL certified etc)

Not all manufacturers pay for all the various accreditations / tests to be done but if they have paid / passed it is probably a good sign.

This is a good article : http://www.pinkbike.com/news/DH-Helmets-vs-Motocross-Helmets-Which-Is-Safer.html

Spec new FF helmet has nice features like eject system etc

It's a bit tricky on standards, because the F1952's a bit of a wonky standard (*) and hasn't really taken off- IIRC Giro have stopped using it so they're no longer accredited even for helmets that have formerly passed the test.

(*it's a downhill standard but not exclusively for fullface, it's fudged so it can also do pisspots- so while there's a chinpiece test you can fail it or decline to get it tested and still get approval for the rest of the helmet. Or so I am told, I'm not an insider or anything)

So get the one that fits, and is most comfortable- I've not found anything I'd replace my Urge with, it wasn't expensive but it's pretty light, fits me like a headglove and extremely well vented

Very interesting read, ta.

The discounted Troy Lee FF lid I got from CRC is a "grey import" from the US so it's heavier than the UK version and passes the SNELL/DOT tests as well as CE so (naturally?) I assumed it was "better" and offered more protection - possibly not though after reading that article.

D3 and if you dont like the chin guard being too near your face, D2.

I've yet to meet anyone who finds the D3 genuinely comfortable. They tend to poke into the forehead. IMO the Fox Rampage carbon is a much more comfortable helmet and is built to a far higher standard (at least on a visual inspection).

The Bell Transfer is DOT certified and quit comfy and well worth a look but doesn't really have the bling factor of TLD or Fox. The Nema Player Carbon might be worth a look too if you can find one. Lovely looking in the flesh and very comfy, albeit not as plush as the Fox.

Id recommend the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon - its a great helmet... but only if it fits you. With helmets fit is #1 always. No amount of MIPs/other fangled things will help you if the helmet doesn't fit right. The fox has a load of inner sizes and multiple shells too, so I found it easy to get a perfect fit. It also looks the bomb 🙂

I meant in the flesh Tom. I don't doubt there are people out there who they fit but in four years selling them, everyone complained about the forehead pokey bits. I would venture to say that a lot of people buy them based on the look and the name, with fit and comfort a secondary or tertiary concern. Not you though, obviously.

I have used D3's since they launched as the D2 were a terrible fit due to their cross sizes. The 'true' medium D3 fits me like a glove, really comfy.

Find mine really comfy, no idea what you mean about the forehead thing. From day 1, put it on, and didn't think more about it.

Me. I tried one and found the forehead part really uncomfortable, although it didn't fit my head so it was a bit of a moot point.

Bit harsh to criticise a helmet that didn't fit you for being uncomfortable
