I'm sure I saw a thread recently about the best method for replacing a hub, like for like, but typically I can't find it.
Anyway I'm replacing a rear pro4 boost hub with another, long story - dont ask. As everything will be the same and I'll be re-using the spokes what's the best way of doing it?
Cheers
Can't see any shortcuts!
Got to unlace and then rebuild.
Former is quicker if you loosen every 2nd 2 spokes first, then you can turn the hub a little to push the remaining ones through and unscrew the nipples by hand.
Sounds like you can't just replace all the internals?
There's an easy way of replacing a rim and that is to tape the new rim to the old one and transfer the spokes over one by one then tension and true as you would a normal wheel build. As for replacing a hub there's no other option other than taking every spoke out and putting them into the new one.
As above, no easy way really. Try and re-use the spokes in the same place though, so you should have 4 separate 'sets': left inside, left outside, right inside, right outside
Don't bother taping. Just strip and rebuild - it's quicker and easier. You need to make sure that you keep the spokes "sided" though as it's possible that two wheels can have four different lengths of spokes. Generally, I'd remove one of each (FL, FR, RL, RR), measure it and record and then if you get 'em muddled up, it's not the end of the world 🙂
Is this a follow up to your rear Hope problem? If so, I'd like to know the outcome... 😊

@scotroutes Your Google Fu is impressive 🙂
Yes it's a follow on from that thread. I didn't manage to track down why the hub is wider than it should be, although I still think it'll be a bearing not seated properly within the hub. I'm building up a new frame currently and I finally got fed up with messing about turning down IS brake adaptors to get everything to fit the bloody hub, so I'm replacing it with another and I'll strip it down fully once it's out of the wheel.
As to the original question once I thought about it I realised the thread I was thinking of would have been about rim replacement rather than hub, and as others rightly point out there is no quick fix. I'll strip and rebuild once I've marked the position of the spokes so they go back in the same place.
Cheers All.
We have a winner
For the benefit of @scotroutes, and anybody else who read the original thread and might in some minuscule way actually GAF, my original too wide boost pro4 hub turned out to be a pro4 150mm DH hub.
So there we go, hub replaced, mystery solved and lesson learned not to blindly accept ebay sellers know WTF they're selling
Anybody wanna buy a Hope pro4 150mm DH hub? 😉
