A friend at work has expressed an interest in a hardtail and has a budget of £1000.

He would prefer a 29er but not that fussed.

Needs to be up to date as possible and something more suited to trails rather than XC

What's the best current bike for that cash or anything else to look at.
Cheers

Steve.

Vitus Sentier 29 has to be up there. Fairly modern frame shape (less xc orientated than the Bizango Carbon - although that’s also a good bike for the money if it suits your riding) not too heavy and fits in better components than most manufacturers for the budget.

On one scandal is probably worth a shout too if it goes in the sale. Has more aggressive geometry for trails.

Boardman MHT 8.9. If it anything like my 29er it will be a monster.

Aye, I always forget about the Sonder, nice bike that, and if any issues, I'd rather deal with Alpkit than CRC.

Cheers all.

If he were to up his budget to £1300 would that get him onto a much better bike or not really?

Radon Cragger? Has a dropper post (Vitus/Sonder don't have one), 12sp (Vitus is 11) and has a 35mm fork (Vitus/Sonder are 32mm)

Bird Zero29 possibly for 1300 or under if he configures it well. I might be wrong though, could tip 1500.

I really like the V2 Whyte hardtails, they won't win on specs, but the quality and feel of them is top notch.

No experience of the next two, but value for money looks hard to beat.

null
Decathlon

He could get a set of 29" wheels with the change

I personally would get the sonder or something similar and then spend money on a dropper seatpost and a riding gear if it takes one which it should

Yes the sonder with few upgrades is the way I’d go 🙂

Muted colored parts available too 😉

Carbon Bizango?

That is a nice looking bike. I'm in the market for a road bike and you get so much less bike for your money.
