Hi all,

Just bought a Croix de Fer frameset via eBay, but I'm new to this 'adventure' / 'gravel' lark, so speccing up components is a bit of a mystery.

Can anyone give me some ideas for a decent wheelset for about £200 max please? Happy to go second hand for more value.

Will be using the bike for forest tracks, gravel bridleways plus commuting via some pretty ropey lanes during the winter.

I like the look of the Hunt 4Seasons, but reckon I might struggle to find a second hand pair for the budget.

Thank you.

P.S. Would quite like tubeless ready if possible...

I was in pretty much the same predicament last week and settled for the prime road race disc wheels from wiggle. Haven’t used them in anger yet but seem to be pretty good value, light and tubeless ready

I got some lovemud 700c wheels for my escapade for around that price if I remember. Tubeless ready too (once taped).

they seem to have been pretty reliable.

I'm running the Prime disc wheels as above, ridiculous value including valves. Commuting on/off road at 50psi tubeless in cheap Vittoria Adventure Trails from PX.

I have a pair of Halo Devaura Disc wheels in barely used condition. Have been listed on here if you search and are currently on ebay and I'm willing to haggle (some). 6 bolt and can be run tubeless.

Someone on here was selling the OE wheels from their GT Grade for £60, check the classifieds. Then spend the remaining budget on tyres/sealant/cassette etc.

They're reasonably light, Alex Rims ATD470 , Formula 6-bolt disc hubs, 11-speed compatible, can be run tubeless. I have the same Wheelset and have been impressed, no issues in the 18 months I've had them, they're now in use on my 29er MTB!

I've not used them yet but just got the prime disc wheels from Chainreaction for £170.

Another option is the Pro-build setup from Merlin, slightly lighter than the Primes but with more spokes (28 vs 24) @ £195:  https://www.merlincycles.com/pro-build-chosen-hub-alex-draw-19-road-cx-disc-wheel-700c-98436.html

I believe the rims are the same as the Primes, but with Chosen hubs rather than (debranded) Novatechs.

...or <stealth ad> my 1722g set from the classifieds that are pretty much as good as new... 😉

Superstar.

Had about five sets now for all my bikes only one needed a bike shop fettle, all have been under £200 and ace.

I know they regularly have 25% off but the standard price for Superstar wheels appears to be much more now that a year ago, can get Hunts for the same money.

Plus one for the prime wheels. They strike me as a ridiculous bargain. I'm currently toying with idea of buying some as a spare set for the cx bike.

How about you get a wheel builder to build you up something like the new tubeless Mavic Open Pros onto the likes of SLX hubs? You'll have a really nice set of wheels that should give you good service. I think Shimano cup and cone hubs are massively under rated in terms of quality and longevity while the centre lock disc is the best solution for mounting discs in my humble opinion.

Cheers

Thanks all. The Prime wheels look a bargain, reviews seem good too. I might be sold...

@Sanny - I always thought handbuilt wheels were a tad pricey? I do like the idea though, especially since this is going to be my only bike after my full sus, it would nice to have something handbuilt.

Jono

open pros £120 a pair

slx hubs with qr £80 a pair

Spokes and build including brass nipples £50 to £60

That is at retail. I would suggest you try Al at Wheelcraft. 01360 312 709. You may well get them for a bit less and he does mail order. The Open Pros are now properly tubeless. They look cool as hell too. Al reckons they are about the best rims on the market these days to build. Compared to the Primes, I reckon you are getting better hubs, spokes and rims for just a few more quid.

No messing about with too few spokes either. 32 holes build up light but strong. I ran the old Open Pros for years on my cross bike. A very good rim. The new one is wider and is tubeless. For me, they are a really good option. Oh and brass nipples don't suffer on salty roads in the way that alloy ones do. I have a pair of Kinesis Crosslight wheels - I liked them until the salt caused the nipples to seize solid. They now need a full rebuild with new spokes and nipples.

Hope this is of some help?

Cheers

sanny

So £260

Compared to the Primes, I reckon you are getting better hubs, spokes and rims for just a few more quid.

Primes are currently £169

Seems a bit more than a few quid!

And that's without paying someone to build them, so double the cost, I prefer 32 spoke wheels though, not sure at 100kg I could trust 24 spoke.

I just bought a prime disc wheelset and am we'll pleased with them so far. Will get a good long ride on them on Sunday, only road though.

You could have my old wheels, Shimano RX05 for £50 while you save up for some fancier ones. Email in profile......
