Hi all,

Have a DT Swiss E1700 wheelset on my Vitus, with the 30mm internal width rims.

I have just realised that I have a load of micro-cracks around some of the nipples on the rear wheel, so I best get that replaced, especially as I am going to Whistler next week...

So, looking for a rim that is durable, can take jumps, DH runs etc, but isn't crazy heavy either.

My LBS has (I think) DT Swiss EX471 (bit narrow at 25mm) and FR560 (bit heavy?) rims, thoughts on these? I think I would rather stay at 30mm width. Would be great to go with a rim the shop has, but they can order in, so another option could be the EX511?

Don't want to spend crazy money on carbon etc.

Thanks!
Duane.

Sorry, just read you don't want carbon.

The EX471 is the one that Aaron Gwin did almost a full run on in Leogang with no tyre! If you want 30mm the EX511 is the same rim just wider.

Think gwin was on 481, I may be wrong.

It’s been my latest subject of obsessive research for my new wheel set, getting build kit together for new solarismax end of aug.

I think I’m set on the 481s/pro4s but it’s early days,,,, months 😕

Having got a ex1501 wheelset which come with 30mm internal ex511 rims as i understand, id say go for them...tough wheelset & a tough rim; got a few friends with them and we're all very impressed how much they can take

I thought Gwin was on the ex471.

If you want 30mm rim and really strong (but not boat anchor heavy like the FR) was then ex511 is the one to go for.

Slightly lighter but less strong is the xm481 (which I have), although it’s still pretty robust.

Google seems to confirm that Gwin was on the 471 (eg https://enduro-mtb.com/en/dt-swiss-wheels-2015-fr-1950-classic-spline-two-wheels/ , scroll to the bottom)

If the 511 is basically a 471 but wider, sounds like that could be a go-er!

Yeah.. EX range has 471 and 511. XM range is lighter and less burly, some folks run XM481 front with EX511 rear.

ex471 unless you want to run a tyre wider than 2.5 then a ex511. I've got ex471's.

I'm actually thinking the FR560 now, the store has them, only 60g or so heavier, and should be tougher (eg has eyelets which the EXs don't)

EX rims run the Squorx nipple/PHR washer system rather than eyelets to do the same job, but better.

Thanks, went with the 511, shop managed to order, receive, and build the rim and spokes in under 2 days, pretty happy with that!
