Hi, I need to insure my bikes as they've become my primary mode of transport, having read my home insurance I couldn't be certain there covered even when in my house and there's no option to add cycle insurance to it as there is with some companies. Can any recommend me a decent cycle insurer?

Id be interested in this. Most of the insurers dont seem to cover bikes as standard or have a limit of £1K... 🙄

change your home insurace to M&S whose cycle cover is great - £4000 limit and all risks available and a good price (but check the limit as rumour was it was being reduced)

Although apparently it's about half that now for new policies or old ones that have had a claim against them.

Thanks, will give M&S home insurance a look. The few cycle insurers I've found seem very strict on there t&c's, one classed your bike as abandoned if it was left at a train station for more than 12 hours, meaning I wouldn't be able to leave it at the station and go to London and back for the day unless I came home earlier than usual. Also could anyone with insurance tell me who covers your bike when your transporting it, the cycle insurance or the car/van insurance?

I've got insurance, but can't remember who with, but I've got 4.5k over 2 bikes, but it's 30 quid a month.

I was out yesterday with a mate and he's got 8.5k insured for 20 quid a month, by protectyourbubble.com

Esure and Sheilas Wheels are the best for it! Upto 4 bikes on their standard policies but you do pay a premium for them. I have 4 insured home and away so they are always covered. I have buildings and contents with Sheilas wheels with 70k contents and its £400 for the lot.

@boxbuster - the M&S cover is pretty relaxed on bikes and they're covered whilst in a car (although I think there's a condition they shouldn't be visible)

Double check the M&S cover as rumour has it it's changed for new policies.

I've just gone with the Co-Op, £1k standard limit for bikes, but anything over that as a specified item doesn't do too much to the premium. Cover away from home too.

checked this recently. M&S t&c's changed recently so much less good for bikes over (iirc) £1k, possibly £2k - they may not even cover them. Co-op would have been fine (with house insurance) but since I couldn't say when my house was built, no go.

NFU came up best - great house insurance policy, plus bikes covered, all for 60% less than previous household policy.....

not tried protectyourbubble but some claim they are a pain to claim off - think there was a recent thread on here about it too.... but they may be fine, we all have some bad experiences.....

<edit - ouch - protectyourbubble comes to almost half what I currently pay for house, contents and bike, for bike alone......>

Both my bikes are second hand and are custom built, how does the claim go if you have no receipts etc?

i've been looking at protectyourbubble but have two issues:

1) in there t+c they state you have to have all the original receipts and be the first owner of the bike/frame etc
2) They don't answer emails

Take lots of photos of the bike and it's component bits. Before it gets nicked, obviously...

Check this out:

http://www.cycleinsurance.co.uk/e-and-l-cycle-insurance.aspx

If you dont have a receipt ask the distributor to send you an email validating the purchase. If its a custom build i suspect you have lots of photos too, whilst you remember (if like me you had alot of your parts imported) write down where you got them from on the back of the photo, if you want to rebuild the same bike.

Be mindful when abroad certain insurances only cover the bikes for 45days (limited period of time).

+1 for NFU - good bike cover. Had to make a claim for a laptop recently and it could not have been easier.

Hope I don't run into any problems if I have to make a claim through protect your bubble was pushed off my bike when out ridding and the thieving little basket got off with it police are checking CCTV but not looking likely that they will catch the horrible little rat would much rather have my bike bike than have to make a claim tho if I'm honest. If they don't pay out ill be wanting at least my money back that I have paid to them and may even take it further if I have to just to prove a point that they can't offer a service then try to get out of it when a claim needs to be made

I've been looking onto this over the last week and http://www.velosure.co.uk seem a bit more competitive for the cover offered, looking at about £300-£350 for a £5k bike.
