been toying with the idea of a new vehicle. we need a small car for the wife at work, we need a van for bikes.
thought about get a good sized car to cover both duties. this idea has now been ditched.
so we are gonna buy a standard van and get it modified a bit into a camper. but we dont want any luxury fittings in it. no toilet, no shower, just a small sink and stove, and a big rock and roll type bed.
so what is a good sized, hi roof type van which would suit.
i had a transit for 5 years, it would have been ideal, anything better?

Mid high transit? Lwb lots of room.

Personally I'd look at an awning gas bbq and stove, make the most of being outside

High roof Vivaro or transit custom? Not too big for everyday driver but plenty big enough for a kitchen and r & r bed. Not many about though. Old shape medium height transits aren't quite high enough to stand up in.

Depends how tall you are...

New trany is a good van, the engine is finally bug free, the older puma engines had a lot of issues.

My neighbour is an AA patrol man and his Transit custom suffers from weak hinges meaning the doors slide forward so when you open them it ripples the front wings. Final straw was both driver and passenger door popping open and pushing both wings out while driving. Having a quick Google reveals he's not alone and Ford will repair but not provide paperwork thereby keeping the problem off the books.... Wouldn't touch one with a bargepole!

dont know if they are any good, but it is ideal size wise.

I'll be predictable and do my usual recommendation of an Amdro Angel conversion of a T5.

Really practical layout, much more comfy to be in than the usual conversion layouts. Absolutely masses of storage space, including a fixed boot area. Alcohol stove, so no horrible gas, little sink, brilliant fridge.

Buy a hightop T5, buy the kit and do the conversion yourself. Or pay a bit more and they'll do the conversion for you.

Looking to do a van/camper conversion over the winter myself. That Amdro stuff is pretty cool. Bookmarked. Thanks IHN.

IHN - why's gas horrible? I'd rather a tank of gas than a bottle of alcohol sloshing around. Both will generate carbon monoxide.

Get any gas fitting tested and get a co alarm, open your window a bit when you cook and never use the burners in your vans for heating.

Really coming round to the idea of replacing my Galaxy with a Van. Have to be a Combi type affair. I'm not after the full camper thing though, (we have a caravan), but I'd like something with a hob & little sink unit.
The T5's are pricey though. Looked at a Hyundai one, but I'd prefer something with a tailgate rather than doors.
Thinking of converting a regular panel van to get just what I want.
