Oh wise singletrackites,
My friend is looking to buy a Hardtail trail bike on the Cycle to Work scheme. Max budget is the £1k C2W limit (or slightly less if possible). I suspect it's one where you get the voucher for use at participating bike shops.
He has been looking at an on-one or a Sonder currently. Both NX 11sp and Recon builds.
I thought I would ask the great STW hive mind and knower of all what the best value and riding trail bike for a grand is. Or a fuss sus if there is anything worth buying that cheap.

Yep.
Left-field choice, but I picked up one of these for £800 a few weeks ago, down from £1300 then ctw discount on top of that - can't really go wrong at that price & first few rides have been encouraging, the 2.8" tyres provide an amazing amount of grip & comfort.
Can you use the BC discount on CRC with a C2W voucher?
Ragley Marley?

Some places do not sell their discounted bikes on the C2W as by the time they pay the admin fees they could be losing money (better to phone and check first)
Anything anyone can recommend at this price point which has Shimano gears? I can’t stand SRAM stuff.
guide R, GX1x11, Reba, decent frame and decent wheels for 900quid - storming bargain
That boardman is good value. However I think he's looking for 27.5" wheels.
Radley is a good shout. I'll have to see what size he can get away with.
I’d be tempted by the new voodoo bizango - £675 RRP but can get 10% BC discount and other cash off. Spend the extra in upgrades if needed or save the money!
I do like the iroko linked above, great bike.
If he can add another £200 to it this has to be an option for the money

That Iroko looks stonking good value at that spec for the money. I'd second the Voodoo bikes as well. Excellent v4m.
Bear in mind Alpkit pass the scheme fees on to you, cyclescheme is a 15% additional cost. Means it's basically not worth doing with them unless you are a higher rate tax payer (although this being stw).
Mrhoppy +1
I looked at C2W and as lower rate tax payer it only saved about £50.
By looking in sales, cashback etc I picked up a much better spec bike for the £50 more... I popped it on 0% credit card in August and paid it off this month.
Look carefully and do the maths imo.
I also rode a few bikes at that price with Recon's with 'Silver' damping and they just didn't feel that nice. Certainly not as nice as my older Fox32's or the Gold/better damping of other forks.
