Looking at going 1 x 10 with e thirteen or hope cog adaptor xt cassette rear mech and shifter want biggest gear range possible any help on best 1 x 10 crank to use and gear ratios would be appreciated
If money no object then RF Next or XTR would be on my wish list.
My lapierre is running on a RF Turbine crank with a hope 32T up front and a xt cassette with a hope T Rex 40T
Will need to minimise the spend on the crank
Rowlapa how do you find your setup on the climbs is it like having a granny ring
In that case, slx. Works nicely on my rf / xt set up.
My slx setup has never dropped its chain.
Will need to minimise the spend on the crank
SLX/XT 3 x 10 and RF skinny fat in that case
I run a set of sixc carbon x3 cranks with 30T raceface NW and hope trex 40T adapter and the fiance runs the new next sl cranks with the same chainring and adapter. I have a long rear mech and he has a medium. My hope adapter went straight on and ive only adjusted it once, James' took a little longer and bit of faffage but his chainset etc was brand new and mine was about 7 weeks old. Neither of us needed to use the different b screw.
Ribble have some good deals on xt and slx cranks..
I think the 2x10 looks better but can only run 32t ring as smallest when run 1x10
I'm using a RF SL with a works components 32T and XTR rear mech and XX1 11-36 cassette. Very light and lovely on the Czar.
If you don't have a gear changer could I suggest the Saint. Slightly longer leavers makes it a much lighter change into the bigger cogs on the back.
On yeti asr 5 I have 32t with 11-36 rear spot on for any riding, only really struggle on really steep stuff (the stuff that's quicker to get off and walk anyway)
On 29er hardtail 36t with 11-40 rear (t-Rex) same as above
I would always recommend 1x10, no need for anything else and less to go wrong
All on a Five...
MRP bling ring (34t) on X9 cranks (spider-less)
X9 10 Speed Shifter
X9 Type 2 rear mech
G2 chain device - just in case.
11-36 cassette
Does everything I need it to do.
Rowlapa how do you find your setup on the climbs is it like having a granny ring
Possibly 1x10 is not for you...
I would go with SLX
I would really recommend the zee FR rear mech. Works as well as my XT but has a great low profile and fairly cheap too.
Crank you can just use anything.
With the big cog adaptor, you need to be careful with mechs- frankly Zee is a little bit too small to be a universal fit even with 11-36, some suspension designs have too much chaingrowth for the little cage to deal with.
Shifter, it's a little up the range but the current Saint's the best shifter Shimano have ever made, and still pretty reasonably priced
Cranks, absolutely anything.
Front sprocket- get a thick/thin one, it costs just a little more but is massively worth it. If you do want to use a standard ring, I've got a couple going spare you could have for buttons but frankly, they're a bad option 😉
Chain device- might not need it at all
I've been riding singlespeed all winter...
...but just put my 11-32T XT casstte, XTR M980 shifter and pre-clutch XTR M980 rear mech on. I'm using an XT M780 crank and Hope DH single ring.
No problems so far - no any need for a bigger granny ring (thank you winter singlespeed legs!).
RF ring on Zee cranks with Zee rear mech and Zee shifter. Shifter is a bit low rent compared to XT but it's got a longer throw which is a bonus with the clutch mech, When it dies, I might treat myself to a Saint.
That's a 34T/36-11 setup (XT cassette). I don't agree Zee is too short.. it's perfect for that combo. And that's on a six inch travel FS frame!
EDIT: Ah did someone say big cog? In that case Zee might be a little under-gunned.
But on the cheap, SLX'd be absolutely fine.
29er with RF 32 on front and 11-41 on back, removed 17 tooth for the 41.Great fun, I couldn't do the climbs without the 41 on the back.
Both my bikes are running the same curious selection:
Saint shifter
Zee FR mech
Works thick-thin (34t)
XT cassette (11-36)
Zee cranks on one, SLX double+bash on t'other
If you're adding one of those big sprockets then you'll need a longer cage mech, in which case I'd get an SLX.
With most transmission components you seem to be paying an awful lot extra for a blingier badge! However the Saint shifter is really nice - you can jump lots of cogs with one push and it shifts really well.
Havent run a granny ring for sometime, but others I ride with who still use a granny tried my 1x10 setup before the trex and had no issues.
Would recommend a chain device or cltch rear mech as well
Ended up with Oneup 42 xt clutch mech hope retainer 32 xt shifter and used my existing xtr crank, couldn't manage without the 42 on the big climbs, did 2000ft climbing round Rivi yesterday no problems friend I was with dropped his chain on a 2x10 setup I had no problems
Hope 32T narrow/wide on XT cranks using XTR clutch mech on a XT 11-36 cassette. XTR shifter (not their 'very best ever' if I'm honest)
how do you find your setup on the climbs is it like having a granny ring
No, it's not TBH, but it's more than enough to get up most things
Aren't there chain rub issues if you're using SLX cranks and some N/W chain rings? (memory not clear whether that's a 2x or 3X crankset)
Running both SLX and XT and same clutch mechs with each on 40 and 42. Dropped the chain a few times on really rock stuff so may run a top guide.
Try Ribble for decent prices on the SLX stuff.
Aren't there chain rub issues
What does the chain rub on?
The crank tabs if memory serves
Slight hijack, I have seen N/W rings on the Absolute black website that fit on the 64bcd position, e.g. the granny ring on a triple. Doesn't this give a weird chain line, making a real stretch to the smallest cogs on the block? Would extra crank spacers improve things enough to avoid problems?
Trance X with:
Saint shifter
Zee FR mech
XT 11-36 cassette plus T-Rex 40T Cog
XT Triple Crank that I already had. Chainring spaced in by 2mm.
Raceface NW 32T
XT chain
This all works really well, was easy to set up and has been used in Swinley and the Alps with no issues in terms of reliability and climbing.
