Ok on Wednesday it appears ive bent the bottom of my derailleur. this was crudely bent back into a workable condition but im worried about it giving up in the not too distant future. That in mind i need a new one. (i think)

so whats the difference between a shadow and a shadow + ? and should i be sticking with the XT ive currently got or going slx?

Cheers

oh and how do you measure your cage length?

If it is bent make sure it can't shift into your spokes.

Shadow + is the clutch equipped mech.

SLX offers similar shifting to XT, it's just slightly heavier.

It should be quite easy to determine what cage length you have just by looking as it'll be obvious if you have a long cage mech, but as a general rule if you're running a tripe chainset you'll most probably have a long cage mech, but if you have a double up front i'd suspect you'd have a medium. Although I'm sure someone will be along to correct me....

was running a tripple on an orange 5. now double and bash so i gues medium would be the one to go for.

although any advantage of a medium over a long?

I'd always go medium over long. Less cage to damage. Less chain slap as the chain will be sighlty shorter. Crisper shifting. If you're running a double/bash I'd stick with medium.

Medium cage will also cover a 36T rear sproket so you shouldn't have any problems if you wish to run this size (on the assumption you're running either a 32 or 36 that is).
