It has been pointed out to me that I generally have a very strange sense of direction. I always group ride and even when leading sections I know my way around by landmarks and links between the two. Birds eye perspective is almost non existent.

Before I throw hard earned cash at this weakness, any app better than "My Tracks" on android? or recommend a GPS thingy to me for my kind of "issue". off road mapping is required.

Learn to read a map first. Then choose a GPS with mapping

As above, learning basic map reading will give you a better over view of your surroundings in relation to a map. it's not that difficult understanding things like contours and relating them from map to view etc.

Viewranger is free if you're happy with Open Street/Cycle Mapping. If you want Ordnance Survey mapping, a cheap way to get full 1:25k OS is Backcountry Navigator (I think it's a one off £7.99, there's a free trial app)
