If ever there is a reason to wear glasses...

Mate was riding (no glasses) and had encounter with what he thought bush/hedge debris to his eye

Few days later his eye is weeping gunge - urgh

Went to chemist and was given drops - hour later a lot more thick gunge, he wipes eye and finds a beetle's head, short while later out pops much bigger body

not really "living" then 😆

Seriously don't understand people who don't use glasses. I know i'm forced to nowadays due to rubbish eyesight, but even when i didn't need those, i wore glasses for riding. Eyes don't grow back!

I've been converted to glasses after getting mud in my eye. Now, I think clear lenses are brilliant in rainy / muddy conditions. I don't know how I managed without them.

Pics of your friend's eye?

They are a major ballache for me - they get covered in sweat no matter what time of year. I still make the effort though.

They give me such a headache that I can't continue so riding I don't wear em.
I've had a few pairs but keep coming to the same conclusion.
I'd wear them if they didn't affect me but they do, so I don't.

I don't bother if it's raining, they always end up covered in shit and steaming up. Always do otherwise though.

I've posted a number of times before about my unfortunate metal splinter in the cornea experience and resulting shenanigans at A+E involving a nurse, a needle coming towards my eye and the phrase "now, try not to move your eye" 😯

Glasses for me ALL the time now.

What reasonable value clear lens glasses do people recommend?

I always pick up a couple of pairs of lidl/aldi sports glasses when they do them. So cheap as to be almost disposable and can be thrown away when scratched.

My brother had the same time, but with a little fly so not remotely as manky.

(@ska, I mostly wear cheap bolle bl10 safety glasses, very good but a bit easy to scratch... but I've switched to decathlon's cheapest cycling glasses lately, they seem a little more durable.

I'm not an optician but I think you're doing it wrong.

I hate wearing glasses in the rain - end up being able to see nothing without constant cleaning of them and then they get scratched.

I tend to wear my contact lenses more in wet weather and my glasses when it's dry.

Take your pick- you don't need branded glasses to save your eyesight! 😀

We use these-

They're really good for the price but they do steam up if you stop for a breather.

At a slight tangent but does anyone else suffer from eyes stinging in the wet at Thetford? Last weekend both of us riding in the foul weather complained of eyes stinging after prolonged exposure to the spray from our wheels.

I use Rudy Project Zyons with their photochromic Imact-X lenses and prescription RX inserts. 3 years so far and they remain virtually scratch free and they are used in all sorts of shitty conditions.
Yeah, they steam up a bit but id rather that than losing an eye.
When it comes to glasses, you really do get what you pay for.

@alanf, have your tried something like what i use? you can adjust the arms in any direction, same with the nose bridge, you should be able to get something that doesn't give you a headache then.

We buy a lot of PPE at work and I usually add on 10 of These to the order every couple of months. Good fit, reasonably scratch resistant and cheap.

I wear contacts so cannot afford to let grit go in my eye.... also going fast tends to dry them out without the glasses.

Thanks for the advice. Nice to know that standard PPE glasses works fine for this.

Fixed that for you.

^^ those look a bit pricy (~£5) 🙂

The £1-50 eBay ones I go for - keep wiping them, and chuck 'em when they're scratched up - work perfectly

Could never understand folk buying Oakleys and the like
