In an effort to be a bit more self-sufficient when it comes to spannering, I tend to buy a nice bike tool every month, stuff that isn't necessary a frequent use, but is there to avoid a workshop visit.

This month's turn is bearings, as I think I might replace mine after a gloopy winter.  The bike has two 6902 and four 6802.  The smaller are in a linkage and probably wont need a very long thread/pressure applicator.  The larger are in the frame, so a little further between them.  I was toying with two RRP kits this time round, then get the handle next month as its a fairly large sum in one go. (Making do with a decent length bolt for now).  Any other suggestions for kits....seems to be lots for pressing in, but they don't all come with the applicable extractor tools.

TIA

EDIT, having typed that out and thought about it, the RRP kit won't work for frame mounted bearings as I won't be able to get to both sides.  Maybe a blind bearing puller, such as

6801 to get my back to back levo lower suspension bearings out
(*make sure you get the right size )

1 - when putting bearing tool in bearing do it up tighter than an angry farmer, then tighten it a bit more

2 - I didn’t hammer it out, found a socket that bearing would fit into the wide end  and that sat on frame nicely, wrapped socket edges with gorilla tape and using a metal plate, bolts and wound the bearing out into the socket (I needed 3 nuts (2 locked together to stop the tool spinning and one to wind out)   - I **might try cutting a slot in the end next time so I can stick a flat screwdriver in it )

In -

or you can get smaller version for just a few bearing sizes, or you can use the old bearings and a nut and bolt with washers over the old bearings to wind them in

+1 for Bearing Pro Tools - excellent, UK made kit (and can buy from eBay too). I'd buy both the extractor and press from them, but that's just me.

Top pro tip: Fit the extractor and then douse boiling hot water from the kettle over the bearing / seat before knocking it out. Aluminium expands more than steel for a given amount of heat, so this loosens the bearing seat. You'll find that it'll take one, relatively gently tap to come out. I've been doing this for years and can't remember the last time I had to dremel out a bearing shell from a tight bearing that exploded while being removed.

I'll be honest, I also have wind-out extractors for frame bearings as I don't like braying these even when heated, but I'll still heat them up to reduce the work it needs to pull them out. You can need all sorts of weird bits for odd shaped frames though.

Apply a thin sheen of grease before refitting and next time around, they'll come out that bit easier.
