No calipers to hand,can anybody give me an idea of the BCD of bog standard XT cranks?

Which model - M785 or M8000?

It's one of two: 96 or 104mm.
edit: ooh, or Three. I forgot about the 8000s.

They are 785's.

785 are 104mm, 8000 are offset 96mm.
They only did the symmetrical 96mm in the triple 782 model for big wheels - not in double.
