Just fitted BB7s to my new crosser and in the limited amount of fettling I've done the rear feels pretty spongey.
Any top tips?
What sort of cable outer are you using. Go for something like the compressionless Jagwire Ripcord and the brakes will feel less spongey.
I was going to say ... check out this set-up guide.
Then I re-read your post. I'm assuming your cx bike has drop bars, so are you using the road version of the BB7s?

I wondered if that might be the issue. It was a random bit of (unused) outer from the spares bin.

Yes.
I found this Volagi video handy when setting mine up after a bit of frustration.

Never been able to inbed vids...
For me the key, as explained in the video, was to compress the caliper a little to take away some of the dead stroke.
Only one pad moves, a spongey feeling can be caused by the outboard pad bending the rotor until it contacts the inboard pad.

That has pretty much sorted it. Cheers.
Rather begs the question why they are sold with outers that don't really do the job.
I'm still using the standard outers on both my tourer/cx and my fatbike. Never had a problem once they are set up correctly
Same here, no problems with standard punters now they're set up properly
Following a tip on here I use old plastic hotel key cards as shims to give the 1/3rd 2/3rd spacing when setting them up.
fyi i find shouting and swearing at it, jamming your fingers between the back adjuster and the spokes and bleeding everywhere and ineptly waving an allen key about normally doesn't improve things much. ask me how i know..
Now I come to think about it I didn't use the standard outer as it was too short. I used a length from the spares bin which explains why it was guff.
I set mine up a treat via a youtube vid. I think it was a proper SRAM vid. Dead easy really if you take their methodical approach. First one took about 15mins as I was taking it slowly. The second took about 3 mins.
fit an-line barrel adjuster between the brake lever and the first cable stop on the frame (or first zip tie if a continuous run)
allows you to take any slack in the system
works every time...
