Afternoon all, I've a question about BB5 setup I'd be grateful for some help on. Going by SRAM's instructions, when setting up/adjusting the brakes, there should be enough slack in the cable to allow the actuating arm to return to it's natural position and not be engaged at all.

That's fine in theory, but if I want any performance at all I have to set the moving pad closer to the rotor by engaging the arm slightly then tightening the cable. When I do this, the brakes perform perfectly, the pads are equidistant from the rotor and there is minimal bending of the rotor when braking.

So, has anyone had any success setting it up as SRAM suggest or is it necessary to add tension to the arm? Thanks for any advice.

I do as you do, and it performs far better and I'm still alive. SRAM seem to be basing their instructions on some mythical non-existent lever that I've never discovered. I think you'll be fine.

There is slack in the arm BEFORE the pad starts moving. That, i always take up.

Granted mine are bb7s, but I do the same as you OP, otherwise they don't do owt until they're at the bars (that's with Sora and last gen Ultegra levers)

Thanks chaps, glad it's not just me. If the cable is *just* enough to let the arm rest, the levers can be pulled back to the bar, even with new pads. There's a definite flaw in SRAMs instructions.
