Does anyone have any experience of BB30 adapters? Specifically the Wheels one? The frame I want to buy has this adaptor as standard and I don't want to buy it if it crap/creaky/a pain.

Yep. Have just fitted the Wheels Manufacturing adapters and my BB is now happily creak free.

i was thinking about these too - there are adapters , and there are the newer outboard BB's

anyone fitted the outboard bb's and if so, looks like special tooling is involved?

what cranks would run nice with these?

B2B - a standard HTII tool fits these. They adapt to either 24mm axle (Shimano etc) or to 24/22mm Sram type.

Yeti are fitting the Praxis Works BB adapter in SB5C and SB6C complete builds. Mine's been creak free so far (only a few weeks, to be fair).

Been using a Praxis Works on my Kona JTS for about 5 months - no creaking what so ever.

My praxis one lasted about a year and the wheels one is almost the same age and now a bit rough
So about the same but neither creak

BB30 doesn't creak if you smear bearing fit compound on the axle where it passes through the bearing inner races.

On my experience working as a mechanic dealing with 100s of bikes with BB30 / PF30 and BB problems in general. I've used greases, anti-seize, bearing fit compound, epoxy adhesives and other 'fixes' but customers kept coming back with creaking BB's, this was also my own experienced of BB30 and PF30 on my MTB and road bikes

If going down the Shimano HT2 crank route, I'd avoid using press-in adapters and switch your bike to a proper conversion BB (Wheels / Praxxis) because it provides large diameter, outboard bearings (=more durable) and wider axle spacing (=more axle support, less load on bearings).

This is the Wheels Manufacturing PF30 conversion BB I am using in my mountain bike, with Shimano HT2 XT crankset.

I've also previously used the Praxxis Works BB30 conversion BB, which I rate more highly due to its 'expanding collet' design which grips the inside of the BB shell to stop the cups 'walking' under load. Praxxis was not available in PF30 when I built up the new bike, so I went with Wheels, which several months in seems fine.

@esher_shore

thanks for the great post and taking the time for the pics - as well as the advice on the different types of BB possibilities.
much appreciated!

one q - and it might be daft - but my current shimano road cranks on the pushfit standard shimano pf30 are butted right up against the frame,
whereas
full pf30 conversion to ht2 (either praxis or wheels) give you the extra outer casing
therfore
does that mean the ht2 crank is slightly wider, and therefore pedal distance between the 2 pedals is also slightly wider?
(hides behind the sofa at risk of this daft question....)

i too have wondered this as my lurcher with pressfit was flush to frame but my new rt57 has an adapter so shimano bb sits outside the pressfit adapter

While we're on daft questions 🙂 do you need two HTII tools to fit these?
