May seem like a silly question but are MTB and road external BB's the same (HTII etc)?
They look similar and road bikes are the same thread (if you get english thread that is). I have an XT BB kicking about that I could fit for a while, if so.
Thanks

Similar but not identical. I had to fit an extra space on drive side when I used an MTB one

MTB ones are 1mm wider per side, so while you can sort of bodge a road BB onto an MTB crankset you can't bodge your MTB one into a road crank.

Not ideal as you have to wang in 1mm spacer each side and the threads are already not particularly deep compared to MTB ones, increasing the risk of ripping them out.

Not arguing but the threads look long enough to me Thought it would just be the sleeve width that would be shorter.

Shimano ones are definitely shorter. Dunno about other companies.

+1 it's the sleeve that's the main issue IME.

1mm on the cups is not critical but an MTB sleeve is wider so won't accept a road fitment. Some BBs are worse than others in this respect. If you have a spare road sleeve you can get round this.
