So due to train strikes I'm unexpectedly driving my eldest down to bath uni for an open day next Saturday.
While he's being shown around I'm at a loose end for a few hours.
Any hints on stuff to see/do? Could be cycling (anything from gravel to enduro type stuff)
.. or not cycling at all more touristy stuff!
Seem to be some DH trails in conkwell - any good?
Also if the weather is still hot are there any good wild swimming spots?
Looking for stuff fairly local to bath as I won't have that much time or inclination for even more tavelling by car!
I could easily kill a day just wandering around Bath city centre, it's a beautiful place.
There’s good road riding and mixed gravel riding close to Bath, accessible via the two tunnels, railway path or canal path or you could ride right from Bath uni grounds (but you’ll have a big hill to climb to get back), but I’d also recommend just having a day in Bath. If you don’t want to walk around. The Spa, the Roman Baths or the Tivoli Cinema would be my recommendations.
Next Saturday there are 4 rugby world cup games. I went to Bath for the day ages ago, partner wanted to do cultural stuff....first stop was a really good pub showing the lions game, we stayed all day, had a fab lunch, loads of banter....it was v central, but being Bath everything is. Sorry, no help at all 're bike routes or swimming spots.
Thanks all...
bump for any other tips?
Warleigh Weir for open water swimming.
Nice ride on Kennet & Avon canal to Bradford on Avon - can do a loop including the Two Tunnels and Dundas Aqueduct.
The Avon is manky you wouldn't catch me swimming in it
I'd wander round town for a couple of hours. The baths are good. As are the pubs.
Or cycle down through the uni woods at back of the golf course, along the canal to Dundas, then up and down until you're bored.
Thermae Spa?
Right in the middle of the town, swimming pool on the roof and a great place for just relaxing :o)
If you're looking at the trails at Conkwell they're short and sweet, you can ride down from the Uni quite easily though, towards Dundas Aquaduct and then just cycle up the hill past the boathouse and that's the way to the top, if you have an OS Map you can head up from there towards Brown's Folly offroad, nice easy route, then back down to Conkwell and along the canal or up the hill from brassknocker basin, it's a bit of a faff for a day out though, best just do some sightseeing, Bath has loads of it, as stated in the above comments, you could spend a day in the city centre just shopping, bring plenty of cash though, it's bloody expensive!
Good advice from agree above .
I'm working the open day until 12.30, as soon as I'm free i will be heading out for a ride to Conkwell if you want to join.
If we dont meet up, I will be leaving uni across the golf course, head through the woods (stay high for gentle route, drop to right for more fun) exit woods and across the road and down to bath hampton - over canal then over rail line to start the climb the browns folly- sally in the woods descent - over to conkwell for a quick session ( maybe 3 runs) and then back up hill to bath uni.
message me if you want to meet up
bring yer swimmers - claverton weir ( warleigh weir) is almost on the route.
