The tape I have on my CX / Gravel bike is the OE stuff it came with, it's really comfortable, grippy and has a cool little feature where the orange dimples in are light reactive, but it soaks up water like a sponge!

I'm not adverse to paying for decent tape, but one that's grippy, soft to the touch / padded, is robust enough for cross racing and doesn't hold water is what I'm after.

Don't recommend Lizard Skinz stuff as I can't stand it.

It's grippy, padded, durable and waterproof. Isn't that what you wanted?

It is, but I don't like it. I've had it before and found it uncomfortable especially when gloveless and it didn't exactly last very long.

Supacaz is kind of like Lizard Skinz ought to be ime. I used to wear through Lizard Skinz tape just behind the hoods really fast, I've had the same Supacaz tape on the cross bike, which does lots of miles, for well over a year now. It's easy to clean. Feels nice and grippy. Comes with excellent bolt-on end caps. The only downside is that it's expensive.

Plus one for supacaz, you can find it at almost reasonable prices on eBay sometimes

I run Cinelli Gel Cork tape on both road and MTB. Fulfils all your criteria and happens to be on sale at CRC for a tenner at the moment.  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/nz/en/cinelli-gel-cork-bar-tape/rp-prod25854

I've just got some Giant Stratus. Similar to the Lizard Skin stuff I have but a nicer feel.
