I fear I know the answer to this one already ( 😳 ), but can I get away with bar ends on a low-rise riser bar for by short travel full susser?

I use bar ends on any bar - I feel there's something missing if I don't have a choice of hand positions when climbing.

As ever TJ, you're wrong...

Actually, while I would advocate function over form in every other instance, this really just looks so awful that it should be banned. Just use a higher stem and a flat bar if you need bar ends.

With Tj on this one - how the .... would a high rise stem and flat bar negate the need for bar ends?

bar ends on a flat bar are fine, hence the suggestion to use them with a higher stem/more spacers instead of a riser

flat bars are USUALLY not as wide as risers

A good option

Nothing

Yep, Salsa are an exception

In summary, nothing wrong with putting barends on riser 5its your ride, its up to you), there are alternatives like a higher flat bar, but at the end of the day barends on risers look SHIT. Fact.

I kind of pity the people who say you shouldn't as it doesn't look right (cool) who cares, I'll wager these are the same people who I at spds and see biking as a lifestyle rather than something to merely enjoy, do whatever works for you, f@ck fashion!

I've used Ergon jobbies for a while, quite like having something to hook the thumb in when really going for it. Also nice to have some different positions for your hands. I don't think they look horrendous, but it's function over form for me everytime anyway.

I refer you to my mothers advice regarding the 'but that's what other people do' approach to life.

"If everybody else stuck a red hot poker up their arse would you be in the queue at the hospital ?"

"but it's function over form for me everytime anyway." - Jack - you were doing so well until you posted the picture of a singlespeed...

If the purpose of a bar end is to give an alternate hand position, how does the rise of the bar make any difference ??

I've always thought that the 'effect' of a riser bar can be effectively duplicated by the right combination of flat bar/stem/spacers.....

if it works for you then why not. Some people get so uptight about this, it's a bike ffs! Anyway it saves buying a higher stem and flat bars.

Always have done on my XC bikes no matter what people say. The headshock makes the front of the bike very light, and can be a real pain to keep on the ground when climbing so the bar ends are a must.

Even more important now the second bike is a singlespeed

I thought I'd give some of those ergon's a try too.

Moooo!

[img] [/img]

Bit of an impulse buy but I've found that bar ends give the wrist a rest on longer rides.

there's a queue at the hospital?

the wife's got a set of those ergon moo grips, I think they look great but then I also tend to push/carry my bike up the really horrible bits!

Ergon again here on my bike in the snow. Aslong as you're not using L bend bar ends they look fine. I wouldn't be without my ergons now, they're a godsend on long rides where you need more than one position for your hands on the bars, particularly enduros...
