Not seen so many people with Bar Ends these days, is it because of riser bars.

On here you dont see many risers and bar ends, but there isnt any reason you cant have them on risers if you want..

Its quite strange this place. Folk will pour scorn on riders with bar ends on their risers yet will whip one off the wrist over any weird shaped piece of steering pipe sold by On-One.

I'm not anti bar ends just wondering if you still get the same benefits with riser bars as I've never tried them out. 😉

I've thought about putting them on risers for enduro races to even more increase the hand position options.

You want a nice set of Scott AT-4 bars, that's what.

Risers on FS and SS HT both with risers.

Yep, I have but really little ones which don't protrude further than my knuckles. I like to be able to turn my hand when climbing or relaxing in between the techy stuff.

When I replaced my narrow flat bar with a riser I didn't bother putting the bar ends back on (I admit it was a fashion thing and I'm not proud!). However I have not missed them one little bit. The wider bar allows me to climb comfortably whereas before I had to get onto the bar ends

Sadly bar ends have become victims of the fashion police.
Shame really as they are great for climbing, fast smooth flat sections and alternative hand positions.
Can't see why they cannot be used on risers as long as they are not too wide or too swept.

Other than looking odd, the issue with bar ends on risers is that risers tend to have a lot of sweep and so the bar ends point outwards. Also, risers are typically wider than flats so you have a greater risk of hooking a branch/tree if that bothers you.

FWIW, I have bar ends on my flat-bar commuter but not on my other bikes. I have thought about putting them on my rigid 29er but I would put my flat bar back on first and stick a couple of spacers under the stem to compensate, purely on aesthetic grounds. Shallow but its the truth...

The impression I get is that people come on here and read half of the shite written and then think 'ok, so bar ends aren't cool, on-one are cool, as is singlespeed, and pikes, now, what sort of music should I listen to....'

People just seem desparate to fit in. I am not a mountain biker, I just happen to ride a mountain bike. Who gives a toss about fashion, I had bar ends on my 575 for a while, and I am proud to say that it was because it felt right, not what it looked like.

Someone said recently that some victims will only wear 'baggies' even in winter, the only reason for that is fashion, because they need to look like a 'mountain biker'. There are clearly better things for job in winter.

I never "got" bar ends. How do they make climbing easier?

Well I'm as XC as they come, I don't own any 'baggies' or even baggy jerseys, no peaks on any helmet, and I run flat bars and bar ends. And I bar ends on flat bars looks absolutely ridiculous and should not be done!

They serve much less of a purpose, for the reasons cited previously, the wider, more swept bars mean you don't need them nearly as much!

I'm not really that bothered about if bar ends are cool or not just wanted to know if it is beneficial to use them on riser bars, thats all!

I would have thought if it feels right for you just do it. What annoys me is that there are many people who it would also feel right for but 'fashion' dictates that they will never even try it.

might have to give them a go as my arms seem to naturally want to go to that position on long rides.

One other thing, can anyone recommend which ones to go for? (not to expensive as I might not get on with them)

I had both ritchey mcs and tioga stubbies, both worked fine for me.

I've got some on my hybrid and they're great- much better position for climbing out of the saddle. I try not to do that so much on my MTB so haven't put any on but I reckon they'd have similar benefits, so why not? I have the stubby little Bontrager ones, just long enough to wrap your whole hand around.

Oh no! I've got flat bars, bar ends, multiple gears, frame from a mainstream manufacturer and wear lycra shorts! Help!

Have a look at some of the XTX Horn or Smica lightweight ones - around 58g a pair, and £20 or less.

I've an old hardtail with risers and bid ****off bar ends

I've a 4inch fs with risers and those little cane-creek things

I've a "big" bike with no bar ends

(I was once chucked off the bike when I caught the bar ends on a branch, 1st ever nightride I think. happened so fast I had no idea what was going on)

I quite like bar ends - seems a comfy way to have my hands, sometimes

I use them because I can get in a really comfortable position when climbing or a long flat or incline. As soon as I starting going up an incline my hands are straight on the bar ends & only come off if it gets really steep & technical.

I've got bar ends on risers, I like the extra hand position they give, nice and comfy and they encourage moving the hands about a bit. I find the position that they give natural for long straight bits (and I do a lot of on-road riding). It's a natural hand position for climbing too (although why I don't know). Mine are 'ickle stubby ones on low risers and I really don't think that they look too bad (nicer than a lot of stem spacers to get flats to the right height because it's acceptable to have bar ends on them).

I use them all the time and they do give a natural hand position for climbing, in that your wrist stays straight.
Easton lo risers and Specailized bar ends.
