What happened to them? I still have my L shaped bar ends on my old bike. but I don't see many on bikes these days. Are they just not cool or did some decide that they were too heavy?

(for background I'm just getting back in to it after a 20 year gap)

Wider bars to some extent removed the need to have them but I still have them on two of my bikes.

Oh and they look crap on risers. Risers are fashionable and therefore barends aren't popular 😉

Au contraire 😉

I was impressed that rocketdog's (who took this pic) comment on this pic was simply 'tut' 🙂

(I agree if the bars are very high rise or with a lot of sweep)

Bar ends are great if you need more than 1 hand position, or do a lot of climbing standing up. Irritating at other times.

They're fine, good for climbing and a lot of xc riders use them. They go well on a riser for sticking it to the fashion police.

Must say I've gotten out of the habit of using them and find they make the bars feel congested - it feels a bit odd not to be able to grip the bar all the way to the end. This is just habit though and what you're used to.

I use bar ends and risers, therefore they are cool.

Small Ergon bar ends on low rise bars here. Different hand position reduces fatigue especially on long rides.

I got tutted at by the fashion police when I posted pictures of my build, but I don't care, I like them and wouldn't be without.
