Planning on doing a few overnight bike packing rides on my ht but really don't like the way the bar bag is pressing against the brake hoses where they exit the levers.

Short of buying another bar bag with a different mounting system has anyone got a solution for moving the bag further away from the bars and stopping it kinking the hoses?
I have considered swapping the bars for a loop bar such as the Sonder Confucious from Alpkit and attaching the bag to the loop but am concerned this will but the bag too far out over the front of the bike and mess up the steering.

The obvious thing is to mount it lower so that it's beneath the hoses - at least enough for the hoses to run over the bag.

I tried that but then the bag is dragging on the front tyre.

Run bars that are about 3" wider each side. It'll feel like you're driving a lorry but you'll be about 5 years ahead of fashion so long term winner.

It looks like a small rotation of the shifters/levers will help with the alignment of the hoses. Whether it’s suitable for your reach is another question!

Tried that as well, e_m_c. It's a no-goer.

I reckon hols2 has the answer. Now, where to buy 120cm wide bars... 🙂

Sounds like the bag is too big then

Der perennial problem!

Maybe something like the DeWidget Strapdeck? https://wildcat.cc/collections/accessories/products/dewidget-strap-deck-large You'll need a pair of GFunk clamps as well.

How much is in the bag weightwise? I go for 1kg max plus whatever the harness/bag add, usually 200g or so.

Alternatively fit some decent brakes, like Hope - the hoses exit parallel to the bars rather than pointing forward like the Shimano.

What's going in the bag? It looks massive!

3 weeks ago I fitted what codybrennan has put a picture of. Its a bar extender designed for extra light mounts, gopros etc. It works brilliantly at keeping the bag away from the hoses. At only £10 with a couple of utility straps its a very cheap but effective option for mounting a dry bag.

If it looks stupid but works its not stupid.

That’s why I bought a salsa anything cradle...

how you getting on with the anything cradle? Looks like a good solution to this sort of issue. Ive got an ortlieb bar bag that I think pinches the hoses on my hook extc when being used on the bar. Fine on my mtb but not the hook. Salsa cradle looks like a good fix.

Easy. Probably heavier than a soft bag harness but I’d had a wildcat and a revelate prior and always found them hard to get set up well and they always rub, bounce and sag. I use a fairly short stem so that doesn’t help.

The salsa cage is two bolts and it’s sorted.

I've got an anything cradle.

It's pretty useful as you can lower the bag a bit, which means you can have a light on your bars that can still illuminate the ground.

https://restrap.com/products/bar-bag-foam-spacers

Foam spacers for a fiver, or MYO. Might need to route the strap through the kind of plastic loop used for rucksack webbing so that the separation force is on that not the loop.

I gave this a go - ran a small harness between the front of the loop to the fork crown, but ran the straps right back over the main bar, if that makes any sense. The bag ended up only slightly forward, with just enough room for the cables.

The issue with the confucious bar is the sweep angle with a bigger, heavier bag. If you have a rigid fork, you should have no trouble running the bar with the loop and main bar horizontal, but with a suspension fork, you will probably have to angle the loop up to avoid it hitting the tyre on compression. That messes with the angle of the grips, leaves them pointing downwards a little.

I'd go with Jameso's solution, coupled with a slight downturn on the brake levers. Also have a look at what the cables are doing when you turn the bars, if you push them together they can saw through each other very quickly. Some clips which force them apart are a good idea.

And ref the cables; if you don’t have clips then loop a cable tie around the cables but don’t cinch all the way up, then put a second cable tie around the middle of the first and tighten up to create an 8 shape.

Get rid of the rear brake, apparently real bikers have no need for it.
