As the title really, currently I have a 4pot MT420 calliper which has a straight connection but I was looking to get a spare and thought I might try an XT M8120 but I notice it has a banjo connection. Are they any better or worse than the straight connection? In fact is there any point in getting the XT at all, should I just stick with the MT420 - it’s definitely cheaper…
I think I'm about to learn something here, but I didn't think they were interchangeable.
You'd need a different hose as they aren't a straight swap. A banjo can be rotated for optimal hose routing.
Yes, I guess I need a different hose which is OK my hose is 2000mm so I will need to buy the parts separately in any case but if XT with a banjo is a whole lot better than what I currently have I could do that…
As above a banjo can be rotated, but on one frame in my case it made a bigger difference for hose routing which side of the caliper it came out of and I swapped to a lower spec (straight connection) caliper for a nice rub free route.
If buying to have a spare then just get the same caliper you have as you will not need a different hose. If you are not happy with what you have/fancy an upgrade then get the new caliper and hose. I can’t comment on which is the ‘better’ caliper as I only have the SLX 4pot which is better than the XT 2 pot it replaced. Personally I wouldn’t care if it was a straight or banjo hose, I would be more interested in the caliper.
Thanks - I'll stick with what I have. I think the MT420 is probably the best value for money anyway. I'll have to reattach the hoses in any case as a) I can only find a front one from Germany (which is in fact sold as a rear right because the UK is the other way around) and I can only find a rear one with a short hose available in the UK - fronts are out of stock everywhere.... and b) my rear one is 2000mm. hey ho, getting hold of some at all is a bonus I suppose. 🙂
