Geared bike has needed a new chainring and cassette for a while so it's been sitting in the shed unused for the last 5 or 6 months. Put new gubbins on tonight but when I spun the cranks to check the gears they wouldn't turn. Checked the cranks but they are fine. Now if I undo the quick release it pedals fine but as soon as I tighten it up the cranks won't turn without brute force. Wheel spins fine, so it's not the brake but just can't work out the problem. Cassette is fine too. Tiredness probably isn't helping. I'm barely able to string this together.

Chain hung up on something (mech cage, bit of frame etc)? Especially if its ended up twisted.

But would that not mean the cassette wouldn't turn when the wheel is out too?

Jockey/pulley wheels, one can seize and take out the whole drive train

No jockey wheels are fine.

When you close the QR does the cassette lockring touch the frame?

He only says when the QR is loose, so that could be the axle spinning in the dropouts.
What hub is it?
It's possible it's been taken apart and put together wrongly
Hope hubs are very prone to this. People leave the spacer out between the freehub body and the hub bearing.

Sounds like something getting trapped frame / drivetrain when the qr is tight. When you say undo qr is the wheel still properly in the dropout? Back pedalling or forward pedalling?

Could be an incorrectly assembled cassette sticking out too far and hitting the inside of the dropouts m

Cassette isn't touching the frame. It's an old hope XC hub. It did it before I put the new cassette on. Before I put the new one on I took the body off and gave it a clean and put it back together including the spacer.

QR could be rusted tight into the hub which may or may not affect it.
I could tell you in seconds if I had the bike in my workshop... 🙂

Broken axle jamming up inside hub?

Axle isn't spinning in the dropouts and the quick release is fine, had it out when changing the cassette.

Looks like I'm riding the singlespeed a bit longer and taking the bike to the shop.

You've put that hub back together wrongly. I'd stake a small amount of money on that. 🙂

Hope XC you say. I'd second the suggestions above re: spacers and broken axles. Both are well known.
