As per previous posting, family decision to build up a Bafang converted bike to allow Mrs B to go out when B Jnr and friend are riding on horses - forest fire roads specifically.
A Dartmoor Hornet frame has been ordered - to allow me to strip components off a Transition Bandit which was built up but not used due to more XC focused biking nowadays.
Ultimately, reckon we will have a relatively high spec ebike for much less than buying off the shelf plus can swap onto other bikes if required.
I can get the option of 500w or 750w motors rather than the 'standard' 250w.
So...anyone on here use one of these motors? Any pros or cons?
Thanks in advance.
Don't you need vehicle registration and insurance for something above 250W?
i have had one on a cargo bike for 3 years now.
Cant remember if its a 500 or a 750 but its not a 250 for sure.
I kept it limited due to where i was using it (deeside way)
i had a 52v 20ah battery on it and it was unstoppable.
its needs a bit more input with the shopping or a passenger on now i have a 48v 17ah battery on it
MY motors and battery came from em3ev
IIRC your westhill or near by - im over in culter if you want to have a shot first.
- im actually away to strip it off the cargo bike and put together a regular comfortable ebike for the wife to use during the last stages of pregnancy.
TR, thanks. Yes, not far from Westhill.
It looks fairly easy to fit and set-up, or am I completely wrong with this assumption?
Appreciate the offer. I'll be in touch.
The bike won't be used on the public highway obviously.
easy to fit yes - basically replace the BB with the unit.
Running the cables neatly is an art.... i had it but then i stripped it down to lend it to someone while i was away and then just threw it back at the bike with cable ties 😀
you have a screen above the stem and set of buttons by the grip.
Knowing what i know now i probably wouldnt bother with the brake lever cut outs(so less wiring) for utility - as its pretty quick to cut out when you stop pedaling. Maybe different for MTB
And you have a wire to run to the rear wheel so it knows your moving.
FYI i would ditch the sprocket it comes with - a 44 or 42 and fit the spider conversion and a smaller ring - i run a 34t front ring with a 11-36 rear cassette on a sturmey archer 3 speed hub - but do remember i have a cargo bike set up that can weigh up a couple hundred KG so the range is good but the bafang motor does like a high cadence
How weatherproof are these things? Would one withstand muddy riding in the rain and being left outside the pub for a few hours?
i run full length guards such is the utility nature of the bike but its been through frequently grotty conditions commuting etc with not a complaint.
Also user serviable with (currently) spares availibility.
