I am losing the light wars at present. If I am on the front, I seem to exist in perpetual shadow so I need to get some more power. The most cost effective route seems to be the Ay Up upgrade where they fiddle about with the light so it generates '40% more power'.
Has anyone upgraded their old lights and if so, is the difference noticeable? At £35 a set, is it worth it?
A couple of the guys I ride with have upgraded their AyUps after losing the group ride light wars. They all seem happy with the new levels of light and will happily ride at the front of the group.
Thanks.
Now to dig out my old lights to see if I have any illumination for the time that they are away.
Wasn't Smudge or Troutie or someone else in the UK doing an unofficial upgrade that was better and cheaper with a faster turnaround ?
Can't remember the details now, but I know I looked in to it at the time for mine, but bought Exposure in the end.
Happy with my Ay up upgrade but I did get mine done here in Oz
Did mine last year as I never get close to needing full run time and have a spare battery.
The fee got me a brand new upgraded light by return post. Very happy with performance and work great with my majicshine 872s on the bars.
i had troutie do mine @ about £35 each the other year, but that was when ayup first started doing upgrades and for what i wanted it was nearly double the price..then they started just doing a straight swap and the price seemed to drop to £35 and they just get a brand new unit so from that point of view I would send them back to them..i think their so called warehouse still is near me in leicestershire and they then forward them on...i still have 2 original ones so may get them replaced when the upgrades start again at the end of the month
TBF the upgraded Ayup is still not particularily bright... But the price is good and they're lovely bits of kit so as long as you're not expecting top-end output it's worth doing.
northwind ir right, but as most of my riding is on the road they beam is perfect and adjustable, plus since they use a resisitor, they never just cut out they just slowly get dimmer so i have never been caught out when riding for a lot longer than i expected, plus my battery packs that smudge made are smaller than the ayup 3hr ones buut have the 6hr one's run times so they hardly take up any room on my bikes
