I got sent 2 sets of working Ayups yesterday with the request to make them better .
so in view of the Diy thread have done one with XPGs and the Regina optic .

in what is a very easy and impressive upgrade to the ayups
so haveing one done and one standard meant I could get some comparison shots .

first up is the standard Ayup
[IMG] [/IMG]

and the upgraded .

I dont have a point of reference as to how long an Ayup will run
on its standard battery .
or how warm they get .
am testing it as I type this .

cost for the bits is about £16 plus PP

Its a pretty easy Mod and I will take some pics when I do the next one

I am guessing it will shorten the burntime by 20% but could be wrong here.

sat at my desk it is slowly warming up but it has no airflow at all .
so have hung it on the washing line outside to see if it cools .

I might be interested in an upgrade also. The battery lasts ages anyway on the Ay-Ups so a 20% loss in run time would be fine 🙂

Standard AY-UP is normally warm at the end of a night ride, but not hot.

The three hour batteries last at least three hours normally, the six at least six (one magazine managed to get 11 hours out of a six but I believe it was very yellow towards the end)

£16 is interesting - instructions included?

Less if you were moving, so doesn't seem much heating increase.

Troutie, also interested. I have a pair, one narrow and one medium. Do your new Regina optics alter the light spread or just enhance what is already there? Cheers, Roly.

Roly
as you can see with the pics the standard one is the narrow .
the one I modded was the wide or difused and I did not get chance to try it out .

No worries about heat as its still only 5 degrees above ambient on the washing line.

I'd be interested in this mod too. Looks like a good way to enhance an already good light set up.

Interested in this. Is the estimated £16 per head unit or per pair (ie one light "block"?

Currently running intermediate on bars and narrow on the lid. Definately interested in upgrading the bar set. Lid set less of an issue because the narrow spot follows your line of sight anyway.

Very interested here too.
The spot light which I use on my helmet is fine but the standard broad beam is a little dissappointing by comparison.

Wow! I use Ay-Up lights and have been very impressed by the output and burn time. The output increase you seem to have achieved is cracking. I'm looking forward to instructions.

Hello all by the way! I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

Definately interested in a how to but I might send them to you to get a good job done on them instead of the possible destruction I may cause.

Is the upgrade based on the proprietary Ayup battery and how is the light being controlled? Resistor or driver. If it the driver then where do you install the driver as I like the simplicity of the ayup package. In a previous post you linked to a combined LED & driver board, is this what you are using.

Only tools needed are a kettle / small sharp screwdriver/ soldering iron / Stanley knife
long nosed pliers.

no driver involved uses the existing resistor.

I'm interested too.
Forgive the dull question, but is this a modification to the light unit or the battery, as I've got 2 lights and 5 batteries in total.
If it's the light unit itself, is that £16 per double unit ? In other words, £32 for a full 'bar and helmet set ?

the approximate price is of the parts to do I unit ( 2 LEDs 2optics )

it just involves removing the led and optic and replacing with the new ones
with a small amount of bodgery

Gettin in to the Ayup dont know if this is the right way or wrong way
but it works .

[IMG] [/IMG]

[IMG] [/IMG]

Steam the ayup til it is nice and hot and with the glove on using your small sharpened screwdriver to hook out the nylon retainer .

Dont stab your self I did 😥

[IMG] [/IMG]

every thing else comes out easy with the led stars on just long enough wires .

remember which wire goes where and unsolder the 2 stars .

[IMG] [/IMG]

These actions may void your Ayup warranty

solder in your new Leds on their stars and put a dab of thermal paste on the back it all helps even though Ayup dont use it .

next trim the 2 legs off the Regina reflector and this is the tricky bit it needs glueing in place over the led but not geting any glue on the led.

more pics when I get to the next stage

edit
forgot to mention puch the nylon retainer back into shape while it is still warm you will need it later

Hi Trout

Am interested in this too, got an intermediate and a narrow beam set, would the mods affect the beam spread when using both?

Cheers
Graham

Mine were left on after a ride, and were still burning bright 12hrs later(6hr battery).

I would also be interested in the upgrade.

I Hope Wildrness does not mind me using his ayups for experimenting on

as they do a wide and a narrow beam then if you use the XPE led you get slightly less lumens but a tighter longer throwing beam .
so as there is no sign of my led order coming in soon I put an XPE in the other Ayup .

here are the comparisons .

XPG

XPE
[IMG] [/IMG]

XPG
[IMG] [/IMG]

XPE

I will have them finished and in the post today Wildrness.

Looking at the beam shots, how much would it be to fit one set of XPE and one set of XPG. It looks like that would be the best match for my mix of narrow and intermediate beam patterns.
Cheers
Graham

Do you not need a glass cover over the Regina lens to seal the unit from water and dirt? the cutter pics of the lens looks like an open reflector to me. Can you post some pics of the finished article.

Due to having to paint the dining room and do this as well I forgot the pics for soldering the leds and glueing the reflectors

but remembered when it was too late so we have now got the it wired and glued

[IMG] [/IMG]

and next need to cut 2 discs from some clear stuff I have used 1.5 mm Lexan available form Evilbay .

they then need holding in place before you can do the finishing off
so I used a syringe to place a coiple of blobs of silicon to hold the discs and let it set

[IMG] [/IMG]

now the stack height is to much so the retaining rings need trimming down it is easy to sand them on a flat surface to take off 1 mm or so

[IMG] [/IMG]
[IMG] [/IMG]

and then using syringe to place a bead around the bezel the retaining ring clicks back in and job done .
[IMG] [/IMG]

Sorry I forgot to take a pic of the finished job and packed them up for posting back.

Arrived this morning
Thank you so much Mr T
They are much brighter than they used to be, which to be honest is all you need to know, the upgrade makes perfect sense, I have a magic shine/mytinysun/spokeperson light to compare it with which the new ayup easily outperforms. I will be testing them out in anger this week, first test is how long the battery lasts on the commute.

Hi Troutie, a couple of questions:

Ayup state that they use Cree Xlamp LEDs in the highest flux bin they can get in bulk so is it the change of LED that's giving the increased output or would the change of optics alone give a significant increase?

Also, with the introduction of an air cavity into the light will there be a risk of misting on cold nights? Presumably this will be dependant on the humidity when the light is resealed.

Many thanks
