So getting a new fork for my Santa cruz heckler. The old one is a marzocchi 44 with an a2c length of 527.5mm. The new fork (under warranty) is a marzocchi 55 with an a2c length of 545mm a difference or 17mm.

Is 17mm enough to screw the geometry or should I be asking for a shorter fork? The travel is slightly increased from 150 to 160mm which is a factor and the heckler was designed around a 150mm travel fork.

Cheers
Dave

Have Marzocchi stopped making a 150mm fork?

Surely a warranty replacement should be the same?

Was 140mm ones an option? - might be better going slightly shorter rather than longer travel?

You've got a 2013 heckler yeah?

The frame spec is for a 140-160mm fork so I reckon you'll be fine. Probably.

I'm about to order a Pike for mine but going with the dual position option as I find the front end a bit high on steep climbs with a 150mm Rev.

That's 1 degree slacker, unless slow/slack just now, prob ok.

Yep it will slacken the frame.

a2c is an important number as it's the true length of the fork rather than the travel. Most geo tables will give you a a2c that it was based on.

Looks like HA will go from 67.5 to 66.5

On the flip side you can run a little more sag, negating thge difference a little. It will slacken the frame a little, but its in thge ballpark of what the frame was designed for.

i think they offered me an equivalent fork spec wise. so mine had travel adjust and a few other features and they're trying to match that. they do make a 170mm travel fork which can spacered down to 150mm, but the spec is lower than what I have enjoyed lately so I guess that's why it was offered.

I run a SC heckler yeah did realise I could take 160mm fork. the new one is travel adjust down to 120 which should make climbs and really twisty stuff that bit easier

Unless that item is no longer available, they can't magic up something that doesn't exist ! In that situation they'll give you the nearest equivalent, or if you're in luck, an upgrade.

Given you can drop the travel for the climbs if needed, I wouldn't worry about the extra height. More travel and a slacker head angle should equal more fun on the downhills. Only thing I might be slightly concerned about is raising the BB height, but this shouldn't be much of an increase (especially factoring in sag) so unless the BB was high to start with I wouldn't worry,

yea fork is an upgrade without a doubt. never had an issue with the BB being high on the old forks. still get a lot of pedal strikes! the travel adjust down to 120 was never something I used to use; as at 150 it climbed fine, but now with a higher front end on the new forks I might use it more.

my old fork as a 44, which they don't make anymore, the nearest wheelsize (don't you just love 650b!) and travel equivalent is a much lower spec'd 55 which would need to be opened up and a spacer installed. so an equivalent spec'd 55 has 10mm more travel;

im looking forward to it and it sounds like it shouldn't be a problem

Stick some offset bushings in to lower the BB again and slacken it out a bit more?

http://www.offsetbushings.com/pages/how-they-work

Or an angle-adjust headset to do same job.

I did that in my old 140mm bike when putting a 55 on the front, worked great.

ravingdave,

Jeron here from Offsetbushings.com - we've made plenty for SC Hecklers in the past with great feedback, they use standard size hardware (22x8mm). I'd recommend a pair, it's what 95% of our customers do, just to maximise the change - you can always run just one as well.

Hope that helps,

Jeron
