I bought a cheap 20" disc wheel for my wee boy's bike. It is a nutted axle job. I thought I'd swap it for a QR axle, so I whipped the axle out of an old Shimano wheel. I know I need to use the cones and spacers from the nutted axle on the "new" QR one, but the just won't go on. It is almost like the threads are slightly different?
Can anyone tell me if this is likely? I might have to visit Sheldon's site...

Measure the axle OD and use a thread guage is easiest. You can measure TPI (threads per inch) for imperial and pitch (distance between threads) for metric. Next problem is some manufacturers dont publish the spec.
If you have an old school bike shop they may have a box of axles/cones you can rummage.
There are a couple of common sizes/pitches and them some really oddball ones.
