Spiral is brake cable - the other / gear will split under repeated hard braking, supposedly. Jagwire ripcord said to be the best for cable discs, it's got both, but not cheap.

I like linear BMX style for cable disks.

I just uses regular Shimano SP41 on mine and it's never been a problem.
