After one of the bolts that holds the pads in on an old set of elixir brakes.
Can't seem to find any for less than £8 including postage online which seems a bit steep.
Anyone got one lying around or know of a cheap alternative?
<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">Cheers.</span>
Have used a split pin from shimano pads before as the avid pins kept splitting.
Try ebay for split pins maybe
Hadn't thought of that. Good idea. Probably got one of those lying around somewhere too. Cheers.
I bought a couple of pairs from here

Cant find them now, but here is the bit from my email receipt

I've learnt that it's always worth putting a bit of grease on the screw and not doing them up too tightly as they do have a tendency to get stuck
But I'd rather that than have to deal with those pesky hair pins when you need to change pads in the wild
Cheers. That's exactly what happened! Totally stuck and rounded out the heck bolt trying to undo it. Resorted to sawing the top of the bolt and using a screwdriver.
Good point on struggling to get a split pin out on the trail although I don't generally carry spare pads with me so I'd be buggered anyway!
Jay, send me an email with your address on. Ive got a spare for an elixir 5 if its the same as yours ill send it down to you
You're a gent. Thank you very much. Don't think your email's in your profile though!?

I've got 2 spare split pins and 1 retainingbolt with the little washer. They are for Elixir 1. If you still need them let me know.
I bin the Avid/SRAM pins. Made of swiss cheese and round off easily if they're stuck. I chuck them and just use split pins. Peanuts for a bag of them from your local DIY shop, easy to use and reliable.
Split pin on the trail, I have a mini tool plyers in my bag. Tiny thing but does the job. A spare split pin or two carried also but usually can reuse them a few times.
My multi-tool allen key is more likely to round off a bolt. Did that once at Afan, then the head snapped off, so had to go into the bike shop to get them to drill it out!
I try to plan brake pad replacement though to not occur mid-ride. Rarely carry pads, but have them in the car with tools.
