My first foray into disk brakes and wondered whether they were up to much or whether there's an obvious / much better alternative?

I've a budget of approx £150 per brake...

Tried and found them very fiddly. Almost too much adjustment. Was glad to get back to hope x2 carbons. Avids had a great feel when dialed in just right but that sweet spot never seemed easy to find. the Hopes you don't have to think about, they just seem to work beautifully

Btw...had the bike the Avids were on stolen, and one of the only positives from that lousy event was that I could switch back to hope brakes on the insurance replacement...did I mention I didn't get on with them 😀

£150 would get you a whole set of Elixirs from Merlin last time I looked. I really liked mine, but I'd go for the Rs again if I was buying more, rather than the costlier, fiddlier and heavier CRs.

I've just fitted Elixir 5's like the Carbons without the fancy blades and all the adjustment bits.

Great brakes, really rate them. Loads of power, excellent modulation and look real nice too.

I've used Shimano for the last 3.5 years, can't see me buying another set if I'm honest

They work well. I have them on my salsa 29er. Like the adjustability once you get your head round it.
Found 180 on the front overkill down south but welcome on the steep stuff in Wales

Not the easier reach adjustment of the R model is really worth having over a 5 or a 3, I went for R's as they're a chunk lighter than 5's or 3's, that and at the time I could get them cheaper too
R's are about the same weight (if not lighter for earlier models without the adjustable caliper hose exit) than CR's or CR carbons
