I thought about joining an AV forum to ask this, but I'm not into the subject that much so I'd probably never log in again and someone on here is bound to know!

I have just hooked up a new Samsung telly to an old Technics analogue amp I use for my record deck, to stereo speakers. I have used the optical output on the TV to an optical/RCA converter and then to the Aux output on the amp.

I had this set up on the previous TV and it worked fine. It sort of works on the new one, but with a very irritating problem. If watching catch up TV, Amazon prime etc it's fine but when watching normal scheduled TV on freeview, the sound level goes very quiet every 10 seconds or so on a regular cycle. I've checked all the connections and tried a different input on the amp, even though it can't be either of those things as it works fine on catch up etc.

Any ideas?

Edit: oops, meant to post this on chat, not bikes soz!

I assume you mean Aux Input on the amp rather than output?

Any way, from what you say don't think it can be a problem with the connections, amp, convertor etc. so must be a freeview problem and that I can't help you with.

Oh, does the tv have any other audio outs you could try? Even a headphone socket may help to isolate the problem.

Edit:om second thoughts could be a buffering/decompression issue with the two different streams depending how the audio is encoded so might be the convertor in which case the headphone out might show this up or not.

Yep Aux input not output, doh! I'm out at the moment but will check the other outputs.

Does the tv have RCA or headphone outputs? Both those worked fine from a Sony smart tv to Denon analogue amp.

Edit. Is there a setting on the tv controls for external amp?

Just looked, it does have an RCA, but no headphone output. I will hunt out an RCA lead in my cable graveyard drawer and give it a go.

At the moment on the sound setting there is an option for optical output or TV speaker. There is a greyed out option for external speakers, I'm guessing this becomes available if I connect the amp or a soundbar?

I'll try the RCA leads tomorrow if I can find some. Thanks.

I think you will still get sound out of the tv speakers when you do this, whereas with optical it sends a separate signal.
I seem to remember when I first connected the tv To my current amp I couldn’t get sound using the optical and had to change a setting in sound to prevent the DACs ‘fighting’ for want of a better word - I don’t have the vocabulary to articulate.

Edit. It might have been what Jordan said above.

I’m not familiar with Samsung TVs so what you say about the grey box sounds plausable

Check the TV settings for anything for Dolby or surround sound, and disable that.

Seem the Freeview HD channels use a different audio format, so some devices don't support that properly.
