Talking about the basic entry level (relatively!) Lycra shorts e.g. the Mille or whatever the Rapha equivalent is. Sub £100 basically.

Experiences? I think Rapha basic are slightly cheaper. Any other premium brands that are worth the outlay?

Assos shorts are very good, had a few pairs over the years - highly recommend them, but they’re a luxury purchase. Mainly been bought for me by Mrs kilo otherwise I just use dhb, especially off road where they’re more likely to get damaged.

Neither - I was an avid Assos fan 20+ years ago but their prices and gimp-factors went up and everyone else caught up. The vast majority of seat pads are made by Cytec in Italy, so in a lot of ways branding is irrelevant. For £100 I'd be looking at Sportful or even DHB

When it come to shorts I'm Assos through and through. I find them all comfortable and last extremely well.
Although if I was in the market for new shorts and was on a budget I'd have at look at the Endura Pro SL Lite currently on sale at Tredz. For £50 you probably couldn't go wrong.

Rapha Core, especially with the current 25% discount offer. Just ordered another pair, this time the Cargo. I have Assos S5 Uno and S7 but for the price I think the Core hit the spot for me.

I've had two pairs over the last 13 years, only needed two! They are starting to wear now though despite being very comfortable. They might be expensive but I've realised that they're that durable they are actually very cheap over time, and superbly comfortable (for me at least) on top of that.

I was an avid Assos fan 20+ years ago but their prices and gimp-factors went up and everyone else caught up.

A lot of their kit especially winter is absurdly expensive for rich tossers, however the Mille shorts are only £75 on Wiggle and it's the decade old version of them that have lasted me all this time.

Until you realise there is a selection of 3 different chamois widths - which I assume is why they’re now getting heavily discounted everywhere

Personally I can’t tell the difference in comfort. They’re both very comfortable, however I tend to go for Rapha. Got a mix of Core, Core Cargo and Pro Team.
I’ve not purchased Assos for about 3 years due to the increase in price and the fact that Rapha are just as comfortable.
The Core Cargo bib shorts from Rapha are very good. I think I paid about £85 for mine.

£100 is well above entry level for me.

Never really gotten on with the Assos shorts I have - they're alright, but I don't find them any better than dhb. Haven't tried Rapha. Quite like the Castelli X2 pad.

Assos all the way.

Just got some T equip Evo s.7

Stupid naming convention and lots of bullshit marketing but great comfort..

Been a while for Assos as I moved to Castelli - but honestly I don't really rate their stuff.

It's entry level within the premium brands. Not entry level shorts in general obviously.

I've never used Rapha or Assos before but the Morvelo standard shorts are really comfy compared to Howies and Santini shorts. They do a 30 day no quibble guarantee too.

Never worn Assos but worn plenty of Rapha, my experience of the Rapha Core is they are excellent shorts for the price but I found they lacked durability particularly the Lycra soon stared to thin.
I currently run 2 pairs of Cargo bib shorts which are amazing (not the core version) a pair of pro Team & during winter the thermal bib shorts, they’ve all been outstanding. I would suggest going the full hog with Rapha if you want the best out of them otherwise as suggested DHB are very good.

I’ve had Assos in the past and they are very nice. I’m now using Rapha and I’m more than happy with them. The classics are nice but there’s nothing wrong with the Core range. The core has now become my default choice of shorts

I have decided after 25 days of my sweaty ballbags and humming gooch rubbing against your chamois that in fact they're not for me.

Yuk.

Really like Rapha kit but the pads in their shorts don’t do it for me.
I prefer Castelli for shorts. Anything with the Kiss-air pad (iirc).

Like Aidy says the Castelli Progetto X2 pad is really good. Kiss OK but I find it a bit bulky (I'm very skinny).

Feel like they are trying to give you a wedgie per chance?

I’ve been a roadie for 20 years so have been through quite a few bibs. Without doubt, Assos make great shorts, which last. I’ve tried a few other brands, but a lot of them use Cytech pads, so if you don’t get on with them it rules out quite a few options. Didn’t think too much of Castelli, Exteondo were ok, Maap are good. Not had any Rapha for whatever reason, but had jerseys and jackets that are good quality. I don’t think you can go wrong with Assos. They are the benchmark. There’s so much choice nowadays, much of it is good, but yet to find anything better
