You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My son has started doing some training sessions at Thameside cycle track with the Eastlands velo club. Which means I end up sitting in a car for 4 hours not doing very much. I had a nice nap and did a fair bit of reading this week but I don't fancy doing that for subsequent weeks.
I couldn't help noticing there a load of dirty great hills to the East which look pretty interesting.
I will be parking up here

Can anyone who knows the area give me a decent guide for on and off road rides? I could try and map something out myself but some tips would be useful. And help is appreciated. Obviously it's difficult talking about distances without knowing just how hilly it is round there but I'm guessing up to 50 miles on road as a starter, maybe 25-30 miles offroad. I'd prefer on road to be honest.
From Ashton, you could do a reasonable Peaks Loop on the road bike within 50miles (stalybridge, mottram, glossop, snake, langset, flouch, longdendale, mottram.... ish).
Or, off road you've got access to Saddleworth and surrounding area (my neck of the woods), or Peak/Glossop/Goyt valley area too. All good.
What day of the week are you there - I'd be happy to try and sort out a bit of an outing on or off road (steady pace)!
Cheers
Keith
Sundays, my son's thing starts at 1. Although I've just found out I'll be having to do some work this Sunday coming so I'll be holed up in Sainsburies cafe most of the afternoon.
Thanks for that anyway, next time I'm there and I know I'm free I'll give you the nod (with plenty of notice).
There's a lot of good riding around there.
Start off by getting out of Ashton towards Stalybridge/Mossley.
Get up to Greenfield and Uppermill.
From Greenfield head over towards Holmfirth, taking the left turn towards Meltham, then over to Marsden, or go straight on to Holmfirth then left towards Huddersfield or right towards Holme and the climb of Holme Moss.
From Uppermill go out over towards Huddersfield, and turn left in Slaithwaite up Scapegoat Hill, then left at the top to come straight back, or right to go towards Huddersfield.
Excellent crossbike territory too..
Good for CX'ing round there Jon, lots of little "country park" type areas and a route that nbt showed me which takes in a few sections of cobbled road out towards Romiley.
Pick up the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk at Guide Bride or head down to Denton and get onto the Trans Pennine, through Audenshaw, Bredbury, Brinnington, Romiley, Marple Dale, Brabyns Park then back out through Etherow Country Park and Werneth Low Country Park.
Off roaouster you could quickly get over to to daisy nook/park bridge and have a play on the 4x track in the woods at the back of park bridge (backfield clough iirc), plenty of little lines all over in the woods to play on. From there you could climb up Alt hill rd and on to Harts head pike and then as others have said mossley/greenfield or over to tintwistle way, plenty round there really
