Off there next weekend.

Should I take the road bike or mountain bike?

Any "must do" rides?

Cheers.

Road, some superb riding into the peaks, but you have to travel a bit from there for decent mtb

Annoyingly, andyfla is correct.

If you want easy family riding you are at the bottom of the Tissington Trail there.

If you don't want big Peak type hills, lots of gently rolling rural lanes south of Ashbourne.

Family - no.
rural lanes - no.

Road bike it is.

I did a cracking 50 mile route from there which came back through Tissington and over the ford bridge.

I'll try and did a GPX file out if you want?

30 mins to bakewell too. Lots of good mtbing if prepared to drive. If not prepared to drive then roady all the way. Plenty of scope for gentle off road lanes though with the high peak and tissington trail plus the lovely track round Carsington which is more lumpy than one might expect. iiwm that's what I would do, I would hate to be confined to just roads by the bike.

What about Matlock Bath and the woods around that way? You can reach it from the end of Carsington Water (opposite end of the dam wall) and it covers the whole valley. It's been some time since I've ridden over hat way but it's really nice.

Other than that I'd stick to the lanes of North Debyshire, head out on the Tissington Trail (yup, on the roadie) through Hathersage, maybe Buxton (but thats a bit far) then turn right through Bakewell and meander back to Ashbourne.

I have a cracking mtb route out of bakewell on gpx if you'd like it. Email on profile. Pretty much some of the best descents the white peak has to offer. About 20 miles, 3hrs worth ymmv
