Call it a drone if you want, but it's just a toy.

Fast swooping road, in to the trees. Spotted what I thought was a couple walking a white dog, probably a Westie, I thought. As I drew closer, not only did they not notice me, but the dog started flying. One of those four engined toy helicopters. As I whistled loudly, the thing lurched nervously in the air at about head height, only just getting out of my way by about four feet as I passed.

What kind of moronic half wit thinks that a road is a good place to fly one of these things? A road through the woods as well.

It was nearly far closer than it needed to be. So, if it had been much closer, would I have been within my rights to knock it out of the sky?

(Finkley Road from Stoke towards Smannell, in case anyone knows the area)

Illegal to fly that near people in a public space.

https://www.caa.co.uk/Consumers/Model-aircraft-and-drones/Flying-drones/

Unless you believed you were about to be injured it might be classed as criminal damage though?

What I thought was a dog turned out to be a toy helicopter, bruneep

Surely I'd be within my rights of self defence if it was wobbling around at head height? Yes, I was travelling at speed, but not at a dangerous speed for a road user. It shouldn't have been there. I should have been there.

Anything moving within arms reach is a hazard to safety so entirely justified IMO.

Why on earth are you asking about legalities? If it comes too close, down it, then take it up with the owner if you have the stones to do so/he isn't twice the size of you

Only thing I'd be worried about would my fingers in the rotors! This comes from personal experience with losing some finger nail & a bit of finger tip to a drone rotor. They are quite sharp and spin very fast!

Could this be the next chapter in helmet debates, Their efficacy against "drone strikes"?

Swat the thing out of the air, stamp on it and tell the owner to start interacting with other Humans again...

I got properly annoyed with one that was flying over our house filming a promotional video for the development. I wanted to take pot shots at it with the air rifle, but the wife wouldn't let me.

A mate tried to sell me one of these:

There is a Raspberry pi project to use a directional WiFi antenna (hack) to take down/over drones

Fix mirrors to the outside of your quad/hex/drone, even better a movable mirror you can use to shine the laser directly back at source.

🙂

It would seem quite simple to have a signal jammer to take down the simple ones, the more compex ones have a degree of independence and gps route following, ie like a cruise missile. Thats more complex.

How do they differ from a pheasant (apart from taste)?
My neighbours birds become mine when they enter my air space and are fair game. 😆

If it's big enough to be confused for a small dog I'd not be putting my hands anywhere near it.

Unless you are just exaggerating.

Surely Flashy would never go out without a fully loaded and holstered staple gun?

This is what old style frame pumps are for..... Whack it without using your fingers.... If it's close enough to reach without changing course it's fair game I say.

Smash it out the sky. The police will really not be arsed at all.

Rather than going for the Holland & Holland over/under or side by side, just go for the pump action Remington and be done with it

Just smash it out of the sky. The owner would have to admit to illegal use if they were to report it so guessing they wouldn't bother.

And if the police have got the time/money to look into it they have way too much time on their hands (which they haven't)
