I bought these wheels quite a few years ago, probably from Merlin if memory serves me right, but what I'm failing to remember is what are the hubs?

I think they're older XCs as they're obviously non-disc, but the time has come for new bearings, especially in the rear. So it'd help no end to know what they are for sure, in order to get the right bearings and right set of new springs & pawls
Fank you very muchly
Hope XCs have disc mounts. Pretty sure those are Hope Monos.
EDIT: It looks like Hope have since made a more recent version of the Mono hubs. I can't actually find out much about the old ones. Maybe give Hope a ring?
I think superficial is correct; however the flip side is that XC / Mono of that era are identical except for the disc mount IIRC
rear hub diagram - specifically mentions the axle as XC/Mono
Aha, thanks @stevehine that looks pretty handy. Interesting that the parts list at the top appears to mention 3no 6001 bearings, but the diagram shows 4 of them. I guess the answer is to procure 4, and that way I'll have enough either way.
Don't look at the parts list on the front hub diagram; it suggests you need one bearing; but two axles 😀 - All 6001's as well though
If you give Hope an email they always seem happy to answer my daft questions about old parts (well tolerant at least!)
My Hope XC front hub has been a feature of my bikes since c. 2002 - pretty solid. Disc version.
The Hope wavy disc rotor is also original, there's an interesting wear pattern on that. Set up with a Hope Mini (not Mono Mini) disc brake.

So it does.... someone can't count! Obviously not that important in an engineering business?
It turns out I've got a couple of 6001s in the spares box, so I'm partly there already. Will get some more ordered, plus pawls & springs. Job jobbed.
This page may also help.
Suspect it is a version of the XC build, although not shown directly.

Yup the monos are the same as the xc, bearings are same selection. Its the axles that is the important bit and these hubs only use the one type of axle, which the rear shares with the ti glide and the front shares with the sport and suspension.
I dont know what the service cost at Hope is, but to do it right yourself you'd need Hope bearings which are the best type, plus the setting drifts, plus I suppose the time and hope you've done it right and not made the bearing clicky. So overall costing the correct bits might only be slightly more expensive than having Hope do it correctly
you’d need Hope bearings which are the best type,
No such thing.
To further muddy the water, when I converted my XC to 15mm I used the basic steel (decent) bearings on Simply. Began with a C, Czech make IIRC. Not stainless. Been fine so far and reading further it seems opinion differs over whether stainless balls are really all that.
As for removal, I punched the old ones out with the axle then set the new ones with an irwin flex clamp thing (the pistol grip g clamps with rubber ends) . The fit isn't that tight that I'd be too worried tbh.

Well, I managed to bodge my way through changing the bearing set on a rear Pro4 a couple of weekends ago, having bought the tools (ie presses and whatever) for that, so thought I'd have a go at the much older Mono while I've got my eye in 🙄. How different can it be? (I know, famous last words, and all that)
Sending them off to Hope would be a bit of a pain as they're still in the wheels, but I guess the local-ish Leisure Lakes would have the skills and equipt to rescue things if it all goes horribly Pete Tong.
No such thing.
Certainly better than 10 for a fiver Dunlop 😆
If you end up replacing the pawls, make sure you get the correct type as there was a change in design around that time. If the freehub has closed pockets for the pawls, they'll be the later, smaller ones, if they're open then they'll be the larger types (don't be tempted to fit the smaller type, it'll end in damage).
