Has anyone cut them open or had the misfortune to see the cross section unintentionally?

I'm looking at dabbling with super short cranks and as I have SLX cranks already, they look ideal to drill and tap further down the arm. From rough measurements this would give about a 150mm length. I would consider getting steel inserts too as I've noticed some models of SLX have them.

Zee's aren't hollow if you're after something to modify.

Zee are also heavy, Deore is lighter and is not hollow.

Not sure there will be enough thickness left on a Deore to shorten to 150mm. Depends on the application I guess.

Think I'll ditch the idea for shimano cranks!
